His car was nothing like I expected.

No threats.

No coldness.

Just Leah pressed against my side the entire ride, her small fingers wrapped around mine like she was afraid I'd disappear.

Damian sat across from us and didn't speak for a long time.

Then he said, "She's never done that with anyone.

Not my mother.

Not her nanny.

Not one person in two years."

I didn't know what to say.

"Where did you give birth?" he asked.

"Mercy General.

Two years ago in March."

Something shifted in his expression.

"That's where her mother delivered," he said quietly.

"The night everything went wrong."

My heart stopped.

"What do you mean?"

He pulled out his phone and showed me a photograph.

A woman I didn't recognize.

Dark hair.

Tired eyes.

Holding a newborn in a hospital room.

"This was taken an hour before she d*ed," he said.

"The baby they handed me that night...

the nurses said there had been a mix-up in the ward.

A clerical error.

They said it was corrected."

The word hit me like cold water.

Mix-up.

"Damian." My voice was barely a sound.

"What hospital did you say?"

He looked at me steadily.

"Mercy General.

March fourteenth."

The exact date on my daughter's d*ath certificate.

Leah looked up at me then, her eyes wide and certain, and whispered one word.

"Mama."

What really happened at Mercy General that night — and who covered it up?

The full truth is more shocking than either of them imagined.
