Noah couldn't move.

His legs wouldn't work.

He just stood there at the entrance, staring at forty-seven motorcycles lined up in the school driveway while every other family turned to look.

The first rider crouched down to his level.

His name was Darnell.

He had arms like tree trunks and a beard down to his chest.

He held out his hand.

"You hired one of us," Darnell said quietly.

"But nobody wanted to miss this."

Noah shook his hand with both of his.

A teacher rushed over, her voice sharp.

"Excuse me — this is a school event.

These people weren't on the approved visitor list."

Darnell stood up slowly and looked at her.

"This boy sent seven dollars and asked for one hour.

We're here for the whole day if he needs us."

The teacher started to speak again.

Then she saw Noah's face.

She stepped back.

One by one, the riders walked through the school entrance.

Parents moved aside.

Kids stopped and stared.

And Noah walked in the middle of all of them, his chin up for the first time that morning.

But halfway down the hall, he stopped.

There was a man standing near the gymnasium door.

Someone Noah recognized.

Someone who was never supposed to be there.

Noah's face went pale.

What Noah saw next — and what that man said to him — is the part nobody expected.
