A teenage boy risked everything to defend his mother from the intimidating man in their house.

Moments later, she broke his heart by standing in front of that same man and ordering her own son to leave.

He had stepped inside to find his mother trapped in a frightening confrontation.

“Back away from her,” he demanded.

For one second, he believed his mother would hurry toward him.

Instead, she rushed toward the other man.

She protected him with her own body.

The boy’s anger vanished.

All that was left was heartbreak.

“You choose him over me?”

His mother pointed toward the front door.

“Get out of my house!”

He looked at her as if he no longer recognized her.

“I came here because I thought you needed me.”

Her eyes suddenly welled with tears.

Then she murmured something so softly that only her son could hear it.

“I’m not protecting him from you.”

The boy froze.

So who was she really trying to protect?
