Clara's eyes moved from Vanessa to Adrian.

She didn't speak.

She didn't need to.

The question was already in the room, sitting between all of them like something heavy that had been dropped and couldn't be picked back up.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Vanessa, don't do this."

"Don't do what?" Vanessa's voice was calm now.

Too calm.

"Tell the truth?

I thought that's what we were doing.

Isn't that what the camera was for?"

"What did you promise her?" Clara asked.

Her voice was quiet.

Not shaking.

That was the part that made Olivia go still — her mother's voice had gone completely flat, like she already knew the answer was going to cost her something.

Adrian turned to Clara.

"It's not what she's making it sound like."

"Then what is it?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That half-second of silence said more than anything he could have followed it with.

"Adrian." Clara's voice dropped lower.

"What did you promise her?"

Vanessa folded her arms.

"He told me I could stay here.

That this house was as much mine as anyone's.

That once things were settled, he would make sure I was taken care of." She paused.

"Those were his words.

Not mine."

Olivia looked at her father.

"Dad.

Is that true?"

"It's more complicated than—"

"Is it true?"

Adrian pressed his hand against the back of his neck.

"She had nowhere to go.

She called me in November.

She said she was in trouble.

I couldn't just—"

"You didn't tell me." Clara's voice finally cracked.

Just slightly.

"Three months.

She has been living in this house for three months and you didn't tell me why."

"I was going to explain—"

"When?" Clara set Emma down carefully on the sofa, making sure the baby was steady before she let go.

Then she straightened and looked at her husband.

"When were you going to explain it, Adrian?

Before or after she pushed our daughter down the stairs?"

Vanessa's expression shifted.

"That was an accident."

"We all watched the footage," Olivia said.

"There was nothing accidental about it."

"I didn't mean for Emma to—" Vanessa stopped.

Started again.

"I was upset.

I wasn't thinking clearly.

That doesn't make me some kind of monster."

"You pointed at my mother," Olivia said.

"You stood there and you lied.

You watched my father—" She stopped herself.

Looked at Clara.

Then back at Vanessa.

"You let him believe she did it."

Vanessa said nothing.

Clara picked up her bag from the armchair near the door.

She didn't rush.

She found her keys.

She put the strap over her shoulder.

"Clara." Adrian moved toward her.

"Please.

Let me explain everything.

Just — don't leave like this."

Clara looked at him for a long moment.

"I'm not leaving," she said.

"I'm taking Emma to my sister's for the night.

Because I need to be somewhere I can think without looking at either of you."

She lifted Emma from the sofa, settled the baby against her shoulder, and walked to the door.

She stopped with her hand on the frame.

"I want her out of this house by the time I come back," she said.

"And Adrian — I want the full story.

Every word of it.

Not the version that makes you look better.

The real one."

She left without waiting for an answer.

The door didn't slam.

That was somehow worse.

Olivia turned to her father.

He was still standing in the same spot, watching the empty doorway.

"Dad," she said.

"Who is Vanessa to you?

Actually."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"She's my sister," he said.

"My half-sister.

From before your mother and I met.

I never told Clara because I didn't know how."

Olivia stared at him.

"You have a sister," she said slowly, "that Mom has never heard of.

And you moved her into our house.

And you still didn't tell her."

Adrian opened his eyes.

"I know how it looks."

"Do you?" Olivia said.

"Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you've been lying to Mom for longer than three months."

Vanessa was watching them both from the staircase.

Her arms were still folded.

But her chin had dropped slightly, and for the first time since the footage played, she looked like she wasn't entirely sure of her next move.

"There's more," she said quietly.

Olivia turned.

"What?"

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

Not at Olivia.

At Adrian.

"Tell her the rest," Vanessa said.

"Or I will."
