The ballroom had gone completely still.

Two hundred of the most dangerous people in the city stood frozen, watching Helena D'Angelo press her hand against her cheek.

Roman didn't raise his voice.

He never did when he was truly angry.

"Where.

Did.

It.

Go."

Helena lifted her chin.

Her eyes moved — not to Roman, not to Nora — but to Sophie.

Something in that look made Nora pull her daughter closer.

"I was protecting you," Helena said quietly.

"From her."

"She's the mother of my child."

"She was going to take Sophie and disappear.

I had proof." Helena's voice cracked for the first time.

"I paid someone to watch them.

To keep them close.

I didn't know they would—"

She stopped.

Roman stepped forward.

"Didn't know they would what?"

A man appeared at the far edge of the ballroom.

Nora recognized him immediately.

Her face went white.

He was the landlord who had thrown them out three times in three years.

The man who had made sure they never stayed anywhere long enough to feel safe.

He worked for Helena.

Roman saw Nora's expression and turned back to his mother.

"How many people did you have watching them?"

Helena said nothing.

Then Sophie tugged Roman's sleeve and held up something small — a photograph, worn at the edges, like she had been carrying it for a long time.

"The man gave me this," she whispered.

"He said to keep it secret from Mommy."

Roman looked at the photograph.

His expression changed completely.

---

What's in that photograph — and how deep does Helena's secret really go?

The full truth is more shocking than anyone in that room expected.
