“I was investigating one of the charitable foundations your company planned to partner with. The foundation was moving money through shell organizations. I thought it was fraud. It was much worse.”
Adrian remembered the foundation.
The St. Catherine Children’s Initiative.
His company had almost donated twelve million dollars.
Claire had convinced him to withdraw from the partnership.
At the time she claimed the accounting looked suspicious.
Three months later, the foundation disappeared.
Adrian had forgotten about it.
Claire hadn’t.
“Julian contacted me because he knew I was asking questions. He wanted help exposing his family. I wanted to protect you from becoming involved.”
Claire paused.
The static deepened.
Then came the sentence Adrian wasn’t prepared for.
“I betrayed you.”
He looked away.
No excuse could soften those words.
No conspiracy.
No danger.
No death.
Claire had betrayed him.
“I wish I could tell you it happened because I stopped loving you. That might make this easier. But I never stopped loving you. Julian and I were terrified, isolated, and convinced we might be killed. One night became a mistake neither of us could undo.”
Adrian stood abruptly.
The recorder nearly fell.
“Stop.”
But Claire couldn’t hear him.
“I discovered I was pregnant after Julian disappeared again.”
Adrian paced toward the window.
Outside, police lights still flickered beyond the gates.
Daniel was gone.
Vanessa was gone.
The black sedan was gone.
Yet Adrian suddenly felt as if someone were watching him from every shadow.
“I wanted to tell you,” Claire continued. “I tried. Three times. The first time was the night you built the crib.”
Adrian stopped walking.
His eyes burned.
“The second time was when you felt Noah kick.”
He covered his mouth.
“The third time was at the hospital after he was born.”
A tear escaped despite his effort to stop it.
“But every time I looked at you holding him, I saw something Julian could never give him.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“A father.”
Adrian sank into the chair.
“You loved Noah before he had a name. Before you saw his face. Before he could give you anything in return. And I made the most selfish decision of my life.”
Silence.
“I let you believe he was yours.”
Adrian stared toward the hallway where Noah had disappeared.
Anger and love fought inside him with equal violence.
He wanted to hate Claire.
Part of him did.
But Noah?
There was no battle there.
No confusion.
No question.
Noah was his son.
Nothing Claire said could reach deeply enough to change that.
Then Claire’s voice became urgent.
“But this is why they’re coming for him.”
Adrian straightened.
“Julian was the last legitimate male heir in the Blackwood bloodline.”
Adrian’s mind began assembling pieces.
Inheritance.
The photograph.
The threat.
Phase Two.
“When Julian supposedly died, control of the Blackwood family trust passed temporarily to his uncle, Victor Blackwood. But the trust contains a blood-heir clause. If Julian had a biological child, that child becomes beneficiary of the controlling estate.”
Adrian whispered the obvious.
“Noah.”
“Yes,” Claire said from three years ago.
Adrian stared at the recorder.
It felt impossible.
“On Noah’s ninth birthday, a protected trust mechanism begins the verification process.”
His blood went cold.
Noah would turn nine in ten months.
“The Blackwoods cannot simply change the trust. Julian’s grandfather designed it specifically to prevent that. If Noah’s identity becomes legally established, he inherits controlling interests worth billions.”
Billions.
Adrian suddenly understood why someone might kill for it.
But Claire wasn’t finished.
“And money isn’t the real reason Victor is afraid of him.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Julian hid evidence.”
Static swallowed several seconds.
Adrian tapped the recorder.
“Come on.”
Claire’s voice returned.
“…ledger contains names. Judges. Senators. Police officials. Executives. People Victor bought over thirty years.”
Adrian’s pulse quickened.
“Julian placed the key to that evidence inside the trust.”
Then the recording distorted.
“No.”
Adrian grabbed the machine.
“Come on, Claire.”
A burst of static.
Then—
“Only his biological heir can access it.”
Adrian went completely still.
This wasn’t an inheritance battle.
Noah was a living key.
If he reached the required age and his identity was verified, he could unlock evidence capable of destroying an empire.
Which meant whoever had activated Phase Two had ten months to stop him.
The recorder clicked.
Adrian thought it had ended.
Then Claire whispered one last warning.
“And Adrian… if Vanessa is with you, don’t trust everything she tells you.”
His face changed.
“What?”
“I love my sister. But after Julian disappeared, Vanessa became involved with someone connected to the Blackwoods.”
Adrian stood.
“Who?”
Claire’s voice weakened.
“I never learned his real name. Vanessa called him—”
The recorder died.
Adrian stared at it.
“No.”
He pressed PLAY.
Nothing.
He hit the side.
“Come on!”
Dead.
He swore and threw a cushion across the room.
Vanessa.
Daniel’s final words returned.
Ask yourself why Vanessa really came here.
Had Vanessa protected Noah?
Yes.
Had she lied?
Yes.
Had she abused him?
Yes.
Had she known Claire?
Yes.
Had she hidden evidence for years?
Yes.
And now Claire herself was warning Adrian that Vanessa had ties to the Blackwoods.
His phone vibrated.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
Adrian stared at it.
A message appeared.
YOU HEARD THE RECORDING.
His blood froze.
Another message.
NOW YOU UNDERSTAND WHY THE BOY CAN’T TURN NINE.
Adrian looked toward the windows.
Someone was watching.
He typed:
WHO ARE YOU?
The answer came immediately.
ASK VANESSA WHO ELIAS IS.
Adrian’s breath caught.
Elias.
Was that the name Claire had been trying to say?
A photograph arrived.
Vanessa.
Much younger.
Standing outside a hotel.
Beside a tall man in a dark coat.
His face was partially turned away.
But Adrian could see enough.
A scar running from his ear to his jaw.
Underneath the photograph:
ELIAS BLACKWOOD.
Adrian stared at the surname.
Then another message appeared.
SHE DIDN’T COME INTO YOUR LIFE TO PROTECT NOAH.
SHE CAME TO FIND HIM.
Adrian called Vanessa immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
A third time.
Voicemail.
He ran downstairs.
“Rosa!”
She emerged from the kitchen.
“Where’s Noah?”
“In the library.”
Adrian entered.
Empty.
The blanket Noah had been wearing lay on the couch.
His heart stopped.
“Noah?”
Nothing.
He checked behind the curtains.
The bathroom.
The safe room.
“Noah!”
Rosa rushed in.
“He was right here.”
Adrian turned on her.
“You said he was in the library!”
“He was!”
“When?”
“Two minutes ago!”
Adrian grabbed the security tablet.
The camera feeds appeared.
Front entrance.
Empty.
East hallway.
Empty.
Kitchen.
Empty.
Back terrace.
Then Adrian saw movement.
Camera twelve.
Garage corridor.
Noah.
Walking alone.
“Why is he going outside?”
Rosa leaned closer.
Then another figure appeared at the edge of the frame.
A woman.
Adrian’s heart slammed.
“Vanessa.”
He ran.
The corridor blurred around him.
He reached the garage and threw open the door.
“Noah!”
Empty.
One vehicle was missing.
Adrian’s black SUV.
He checked the tracking application.
Disabled.
“Damn it!”
His phone rang.
Vanessa.
He answered instantly.
“If you touch him—”
“ADRIAN, LISTEN TO ME!”
Wind roared behind her voice.
Noah was crying somewhere nearby.
