Claire stepped around Adrian.
“What happened to Daniel?”
Harlan lowered the g*n as officers surrounded him.
Vanessa spoke first.
“He’s trying to save himself.”
Harlan laughed bitterly.
“Daniel discovered the false transfers.
Vanessa paid me to frighten him into silence.”
Evelyn gripped Claire’s hand.
“Did you cause the crash?” Claire asked.
Harlan looked down.
“Answer her,” Adrian said.
Vanessa pointed at Harlan.
“He acted alone.”
Harlan stared at her.
“You cut the brake line yourself.”
Vanessa rushed at him, but two officers restrained her.
“You liar!”
“You wore gloves,” Harlan said.
“Then you called me crying because Daniel had left the clinic early.”
Claire’s legs shook.
Evelyn held her upright.
“You told me it was an accident,” Claire whispered.
Evelyn’s tears mixed with the sprinkler water.
“I did not know until tonight.”
Vanessa stopped struggling.
“Daniel should have minded his own business.”
Claire moved close enough to see Vanessa’s smile disappear.
“He was my father.”
“He was a clerk who wanted to play hero.”
“He raised me.
He protected patients you stole from.
That made him more important than you will ever be.”
Vanessa looked toward Adrian.
“Are you going to let her insult me after everything I did for your career?”
“You destroyed my career when you forged my name on those accounts.”
“And yet you stayed silent.”
Adrian nodded.
“That part is mine to answer for.”
An Internal Affairs officer took Harlan’s badge.
“Martin Harlan, you are under arrest for corruption, obstruction, extortion, and conspiracy.”
Harlan looked at Vanessa as his wrists were cuffed.
“You promised I would be protected.”
Vanessa’s voice turned cold.
“You were paid.
Protection was never included.”
Harlan gave a humorless laugh.
“Then they can have the storage key.”
He told the officer a locker number.
Vanessa went pale.
“There is nothing in that locker.”
“Bank ledgers, your original phone, and the dash recording from Daniel’s car,” Harlan said.
“I kept insurance.”
“You pathetic fool.”
“No, Vanessa.
I finally learned from you.”
An officer approached her.
“Vanessa Vale, you are under arrest for attempted p0isoning, fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction.”
Vanessa pulled away.
“That glass proves nothing.”
Mrs.
Doyle carried the sealed ice bucket down the stairs.
“This glass?”
Vanessa stared at it.
“The restaurant cameras also recorded you opening the bottle,” Mrs.
Doyle said.
“I sent the footage to three separate addresses before we left.”
Vanessa turned to Claire.
“Tell them Adrian arranged this.
He invited me to dinner.”
“I watched you put the powder in his glass.”
“You’re a waitress.
No jury will believe you over me.”
Evelyn stepped beside her daughter.
“Then they can believe me.”
Adrian raised the phone.
“And your confession.”
Vanessa’s shoulders dropped, but her eyes remained hard.
“Claire, I can give you money,” she said.
“Enough to stop serving people who look through you.”
“You think my uniform makes me small?”
“I think everyone has a price.”
Claire took the charred transfer page from Vanessa’s wet hand.
“My mother paid with fourteen years of her life.
Daniel paid with everything.
You don’t have enough money to buy my silence.”
An officer led Vanessa toward the stairs.
At the first step, Vanessa looked back.
“You’ll regret choosing these liars over me.”
Claire slipped her arm through Evelyn’s.
“They lied because they were afraid,” she said.
“You lied because you enjoyed the power.”
Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no answer came.
Adrian’s phone rang.
He put it on speaker.
“This is Agent Brooks,” a man said.
“We have secured the storage locker.
The ledgers identify six offshore accounts.”
“Can the money be frozen?” Claire asked.
“It already has been.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Agent Brooks continued, “There is one more item.
A video file labeled CLAIRE.”
Vanessa twisted against the officer’s grip.
“Turn that phone off!”
Claire watched fear cross Vanessa’s face for the first time.
“What is on the video?” she asked.
Agent Brooks paused.
“Your father recorded a message the night before the crash.”
