The red and blue lights were already flooding the dining room when the front door burst open.

Two officers stepped inside.

Adrian turned toward them immediately, his voice smooth and controlled.

"Officers, there's been a misunderstanding.

My wife and I had an argument.

Things got heated.

No one is in danger."

One officer looked past him — directly at me.

At the napkin pressed against my head.

At the bl00d on the tablecloth.

"Ma'am.

Can you tell me what happened?"

Before I could speak, Eleanor moved in front of me.

"She provoked him," she said quickly.

"She has been unstable for months."

The officer looked at her.

"Step back, please."

Eleanor's mouth tightened.

She didn't move.

"Step back."

She moved.

I lowered the napkin.

The officer's expression didn't change, but his eyes did.

"We need an ambulance at this address," he said into his radio.

Adrian took one step forward.

"This is a private family matter—"

"Sir.

Do not move."

The room went completely still.

That was when Maya spoke again.

Not a whisper this time.

Her voice was steady and clear, loud enough for both officers to hear.

"There is a locked room in the basement." She looked directly at Charles.

"He has the key."

Charles's face turned to stone.

"She doesn't know what she's talking about."

Maya's hands were shaking.

Her eyes were not.

"I've known for two years," she said.

"I was afraid.

But I'm not afraid anymore."

Adrian looked at his father.

Something passed between them — fast, silent, and full of panic.

And in that moment, I understood.

Whatever was in that basement had nothing to do with me.

It was something far older.

Far darker.

And this family had been protecting it long before I ever walked through their door.

---

What Claire found in that basement — and what Maya had been hiding for two years — is darker than anyone at that table expected.
