The facility's brochure showed smiling children riding horses.

The intake paperwork told a different story.

Vanessa had described Sophie as violent, manipulative, delusional, and dangerous to caregivers.

She claimed Sophie invented abuse allegations when disciplined.

At the bottom of one page was Ethan's forged signature.

"They were going to send her away right after we got married," Ethan said.

Maya nodded. "The reservation begins Monday after the wedding."

"Without telling me."

"Looks that way."

Ethan stared through the conference-room window.

He imagined returning from a honeymoon and being told Sophie had an emergency placement. He imagined Vanessa handing him reports, doctors' notes, school concerns, videos of a man who looked like him entering the basement.

He imagined being manipulated into believing his own daughter was the problem.

"She almost pulled it off," he said.

"Not anymore."

But Vanessa was still free while prosecutors reviewed charges.

Her attorney claimed the hidden room was a "sensory calming space" and the dog-food incident was an isolated lapse in judgment.

Then Vanessa filed for a protective order against Ethan.

The petition accused him of threatening her financially and physically after "misinterpreting a disciplinary event."

Ethan laughed when his lawyer read it.

Not because it was funny.

Because anger had nowhere else to go.

"She wants to make herself the victim."

"She wants leverage," his new attorney, Rachel Kim, said. "Don't give her any. No contact. No messages. No public statements."

That evening Sophie woke screaming.

Ethan ran into her room.

"It's okay. I'm here."

She was staring at the closet.

"He's in there."

Ethan opened it. Empty.

"No one's here."

Sophie kept shaking.

"Fake Daddy said if I told, real Daddy would go away."

"I'm not going anywhere."

"He said he had a picture."

"What picture?"

"Of you sleeping."

Ethan froze.

The next morning Martin swept the master bedroom.

Behind an air vent, he found a pinhole camera.

It had been recording Ethan's bedroom for at least four months.

And on the device was footage of Vanessa entering his study at 3:14 a.m., opening his safe, and photographing every page of his estate plan.
