The hidden room was eight feet wide and ten feet deep.

No windows.

No furniture except a small plastic chair and a folded blanket.

A cheap indoor camera sat in the upper corner with a dead red status light.

Ethan stood in the doorway while Martin photographed everything.

"Was this here when I bought the house?" Ethan asked.

"Not on the original plans."

There were scratches near the inside door handle.

Small scratches.

Child-height.

Ethan had to turn away.

Sophie was staying overnight with Dr. Grant's sister, a licensed child therapist Ethan had known for years. He wanted her away from the house while police documented the room.

Detective Maya Reynolds arrived just after nine.

She did not gasp. She did not promise anything. She photographed the scratches and asked careful questions.

"Who had access to the house?"

"Me. Vanessa. Martin. Two housekeepers. A chef three days a week."

"Cameras?"

Martin handed her a tablet. "Main system went offline at 5:42 p.m. The local storage was manually formatted."

"By whom?"

"Admin account."

"Whose?"

Martin looked uncomfortable.

"Mr. Cole's."

Ethan stared at him. "I was downtown at 5:42."

"I know."

Maya turned to Ethan. "Did Vanessa know your password?"

"No."

Then he remembered something.

Three months earlier, Vanessa had surprised him with breakfast in bed while he answered an emergency call from Singapore. His laptop had been open. He had typed his security password in front of her.

He felt sick.

Maya moved closer to the hidden room camera.

"This isn't tied to your house system."

Martin nodded. "Different manufacturer. Local microSD card."

"Is the card there?"

He removed the cover.

Empty.

Ethan's phone buzzed with a message from Vanessa.

YOU'RE MAKING A TERRIBLE MISTAKE.

Another message followed.

ASK SOPHIE WHAT SHE DID TO MY MOTHER'S RING.

Ethan showed Maya.

"What ring?" she asked.

"I have no idea."

A third message arrived.

SHE'S NOT AS INNOCENT AS YOU THINK.

Ethan blocked the number.

Martin suddenly called from the wine cellar.

"Sir."

They found him kneeling beside a drain.

He held a pair of tweezers.

Clamped between them was a tiny black rectangle.

A microSD card.

Maya exhaled slowly.

"Nobody touches it. Bag it."

Ethan looked at the hidden camera, then at the card.

If Vanessa had recorded what happened in that room, the truth might be sitting on something smaller than his thumbnail.

But when the forensic technician loaded the card later that night, the first recovered clip did not show Vanessa.

It showed Ethan.
