Graham Pierce had represented Ethan for eleven years.
He had drafted his company acquisitions, his estate plan, his will, and the trust that protected Sophie's inheritance.
At 7:15 the next morning, Ethan walked into Graham's office without an appointment.
Graham stood behind his desk.
"Ethan. I heard there was an incident."
"Sit down."
"This is my office."
"Then sit in your office."
Graham studied him and slowly lowered himself into the chair.
Detective Reynolds waited in the hallway with a warrant application in progress. Ethan had insisted on speaking first.
"How well do you know Daniel Mercer?" Ethan asked.
Graham's face barely moved.
"Vanessa's brother? I've met him."
"How many times?"
"I don't keep count."
"Were you in my basement?"
A pause.
"What?"
"Were you in my house, in a hidden room behind my wine cellar, while my daughter was being locked inside?"
Graham stood. "You need to leave."
"Wrong answer."
Ethan placed his phone on the desk and played the recovered audio.
We're running out of time. Get the trust documents signed.
Graham's face drained of color.
"That isn't what you think."
"Then explain it."
"Vanessa told me Sophie was having behavioral episodes. She said the room was a calming space."
Ethan almost laughed.
"A calming space with scratches inside the door?"
"I never saw that."
"What trust documents?"
Graham looked toward the closed office door.
"Ethan, you were planning to marry Vanessa. Your existing trust leaves nearly everything to Sophie. Vanessa asked about spousal protections. That's normal."
"Did you draft changes?"
"Drafts. Nothing executed."
"Show me."
Graham hesitated.
That hesitation told Ethan enough.
Maya entered with two officers ten minutes later.
They secured Graham's computers and paper files.
By noon, a forensic accountant found an unsigned amendment that would have given Vanessa control over a large portion of Sophie's trust if Ethan died before Sophie turned twenty-five.
Ethan read the clause twice.
"She would control Sophie's money?"
The accountant nodded. "As trustee, yes."
"How much?"
"At current valuation? About ninety-two million dollars."
Ethan went silent.
Then Maya's phone rang.
She listened, asked two questions, and looked at Ethan.
"We found Daniel Mercer."
"Where?"
"Airport parking garage. He was trying to leave the country."
"Good."
"Not good."
Maya's expression tightened.
"He had Sophie's passport in his bag."
