Sophie described him in fragments.

"He had Daddy hair."

"He wore Daddy clothes."

"He smelled like the garage."

"He said I had to call him Dad if the camera was on."

Ethan kept his face calm while every answer made him colder.

Detective Reynolds brought in a child forensic interviewer the next morning. Ethan watched from behind glass.

Sophie was given crayons and dolls. No leading questions. No pressure.

She picked a male doll with brown plastic hair.

"This is Fake Daddy."

"What did Fake Daddy do?" the interviewer asked.

"He brought water. Sometimes crackers."

"Did he hurt you?"

Sophie shook her head.

"He told Vanessa when I cried."

"Do you know his real name?"

Sophie thought.

"Danny."

Daniel Mercer.

Maya later explained the likely reason for the disguise.

"They may have wanted video that could confuse anyone reviewing it. Make it look like you participated. Create leverage."

"Against me?"

"Or insurance for Vanessa. If things went wrong, she could claim you knew."

Ethan felt physically ill.

The case widened.

Graham Pierce's seized emails revealed repeated messages with Vanessa discussing "succession timing," "marital security," and "behavioral documentation."

One email stood out.

Vanessa wrote: SHE NEEDS TO LOOK UNSTABLE BEFORE THE WEDDING.

Graham replied: DO NOT PUT THAT IN WRITING.

Maya read it twice.

"That's not good for either of them."

Ethan's phone rang from the school.

Sophie's principal sounded nervous.

"Mr. Cole, we found something in Sophie's file."

"What?"

"A letter requesting an evaluation for severe behavioral disturbance."

"I never requested that."

"It has your electronic signature."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Who submitted it?"

"Vanessa Hall."

The principal hesitated.

"There's more. She also asked us to prepare documentation that Sophie was aggressive, dishonest, and prone to false accusations."

Ethan gripped the desk.

Vanessa had not been reacting to a difficult child.

She had been building a record.

A record designed to make nobody believe Sophie when she finally spoke.

Then the principal said, "Mr. Cole, one of Sophie's teachers kept a private note because something felt wrong. I think you need to see it."
