Julian froze.
Eleanor stepped back, her face draining of color.
"What is this?" Julian's voice cracked.
"Who called you?"
Attorney Sarah Thorne didn't answer him.
She walked straight to Genevieve's bedside, leaned down, and said quietly, "I have everything.
You did exactly right."
Genevieve's eyes filled with tears.
Her hand was still shaking from where the pen had been forced into it.
Eleanor found her voice first.
"She's mentally unfit.
She's been medicated.
Nothing she recorded is admissible—"
"That's interesting," Sarah said, turning slowly.
"Because the hospital security cameras are not medicated.
And neither are the two nurses who were standing just outside that door."
Julian looked toward the hallway.
Both nurses were still there.
Neither of them moved.
"You have no case," Julian said.
"She signed nothing."
"No," Sarah agreed.
"She didn't.
But you just confirmed you intended her to."
Eleanor grabbed Julian's arm.
She whispered something fast and sharp into his ear.
His expression shifted.
Something darker moved across his face.
He looked at the bassinet.
Then at Genevieve.
"This isn't over," he said.
"You think a recording protects you?
We have something you haven't seen yet."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.
Sarah's eyes locked onto it.
And for the first time, her calm expression changed.
---
What was inside that envelope — and why did it make Sarah Thorne go quiet?
