"Get away from that plate!" the manager yelled, throwing the food aside.
The 10-year-old wept, "I haven't eaten in three days." The chef stepped in and fed him.
20 years later, 6 black SUVs surrounded the diner.
Ethan stepped out, looked at the old chef, and whispered, "I didn't return for a meal..."
The air was heavy with the scent of griddle cakes, melted butter, and rich coffee.
"Get away from that plate!"
The manager's shout silenced the entire diner.
Before Ethan could touch the three abandoned pancakes, the man snatched the plate and tossed it into the trash.
"Pay or get out!"
The ten-year-old lowered his head as tears traced lines through the dirt on his cheeks.
"I haven't eaten in three days…"
"Not my problem!"
Then a deep voice came from the kitchen.
"It's my problem now."
The executive chef stepped forward and placed a steaming meal in front of Ethan.
"Sit down.
Eat until your stomach stops hurting."
Before leaving, Ethan pulled a tarnished silver coin from his pocket.
"This is all my mother left me.
Please take it."
The chef gently pushed the boy's hand back.
"Keep it as the seed of your future."
Twenty years later, six black SUVs stopped outside the aging diner.
A powerful man stepped from the final vehicle, removed his dark glasses, and looked steadily at the gray-haired chef.
"Perhaps you've forgotten the beggar boy you once fed."
The old man froze.
It was Ethan.
And he had not returned merely for another meal.
