CHAPTER 10: MERCER

Adrian Mercer surrendered forty-three minutes later.

Not because he found courage.

Because he ran out of options.

State police surrounded the evidence annex.

Federal internal-security teams arrived.

The transmitted archive had triggered automatic preservation orders in four jurisdictions.

Mercer's accounts froze.

Danner's command network collapsed.

By sunrise, twenty-three people had been detained.

By noon, it was forty-one.

Ryan rode to the hospital with Thomas.

Before he left, he found me beside the ambulance.

His arm was wrapped.

His face gray with exhaustion.

"Director."

"Marcus."

He nodded.

"Marcus."

He looked down.

"I know this isn't the time."

"It probably isn't."

"I may never see you again."

"You will."

"At my disciplinary hearing?"

"Probably."

He managed a tiny smile.

Then it vanished.

"I meant what I said."

"I know."

"I was wrong."

"Yes."

"I was more than wrong."

"Yes."

"I humiliated you."

I said nothing.

"I used force I didn't need."

"Yes."

"I decided your badge was fake before I looked at it."

"Yes."

His eyes met mine.

"I can't undo that."

"No."

"What happens now?"

"Investigation."

"Will I lose my job?"

"I don't know."

He nodded slowly.

"I might deserve to."

"That's not mine to decide."

"I know."

I looked toward the ambulance.

Thomas waited inside.

"Your father has sixteen years of explanations to give you."

Ryan laughed softly.

"That's going to be a long conversation."

"Probably longer than your disciplinary hearing."

This time he genuinely smiled.

Then he turned serious again.

"You said what I did next mattered."

"It does."

"Did tonight count?"

"Tonight always counts."

He looked relieved.

Not absolved.

Relieved.

There was a difference.

He climbed into the ambulance.

Thomas reached for his son's good hand.

Ryan hesitated.

Then let him take it.

The doors closed.

I watched them drive away.

Ortiz came beside me.

"You're getting sentimental."

"I'm exhausted."

"Same thing after thirty hours awake."

I looked toward the highway.

"Did anyone recover my sedan?"

"Destroyed."

"What?"

"Mercer's team torched it after we left."

I stared at her.

"My government sedan?"

"Taxpayers will survive."

"My credentials were near it."

Ortiz grimaced.

"Badge too?"

"Yeah."

"That one's annoying."

I looked at my wrists.

The dark cuff marks remained.

"What about Mitchell's cruiser?"

"Impounded."

"Body camera?"

"Recovered."

"Working?"

Ortiz smiled.

"Entire time."

That mattered.

Not only because it documented Mitchell's misconduct.

It also documented the false alert.

The authorization code.

The exact second the bridge exploded.

Evidence had a way of surviving when people didn't expect it to.

I thought the story was ending.

It wasn't.
