His son rose slowly, still clutching an orange.
“Grandpa told us she abandoned you.”
The father’s jaw tightened.
“He said she chose another family.”
His mother reached into her worn coat.
“I never chose anyone over you.”
“Then why didn’t you come back?”
“I did.
Your father had me turned away every time.
He changed your school, moved you away, and returned every letter I sent.”
She pulled out a faded envelope.
His childhood name was written across the front in careful handwriting.
A red stamp read: RETURN TO SENDER.
“There are dozens more,” she said.
“I kept every one.”
His son looked up at him.
“Dad, call Grandpa.”
With trembling fingers, the father put the call on speaker.
His father answered sharply.
“What do you want?”
“I found Mom.”
Silence.
Then the old man’s voice dropped.
“Listen to me.
Do not believe a word she says.”
“Why?
What are you afraid she’ll tell me?”
His mother suddenly grabbed his wrist.
“Ask him about the papers he made me sign.”
The line went quiet again.
“What papers?” the father demanded.
Before anyone could answer, a dark car stopped beside them—and the man who stepped out was holding a folder with the family name written across it.
Those papers hid the truth that destroyed their family.
