Victor was already seated when Daniel entered the boardroom with Eleanor, Noah, Martin, and Mrs.

Bell.

Seven directors watched them cross the room.

Victor tapped the agenda.

“This meeting concerns Daniel’s misconduct, not an old domestic disagreement.”

Daniel placed the stock ledger on the table.

“This concerns the property you used to build this company.”

Victor did not touch it.

“A household employee stole that book.”

Mrs.

Bell remained standing.

“I used the key you gave me when you trusted me to clean what you were too important to notice.”

One director opened the ledger.

“These original shares belonged to Eleanor Mercer.”

Victor pointed at Daniel.

“He ratified their transfer when he turned eighteen.”

“I did not.”

“You expect the board to accept your memory over a signed document?”

Martin connected a laptop to the screen.

A conference photograph appeared with a timestamp.

Daniel said, “The bank claims I entered its vault last Tuesday at 10:14 a.m.

This photograph places me in Toronto at 10:11.”

Victor shrugged.

“A photograph can be altered.”

Noah raised his phone.

“So can a signature.”

Victor glared at him.

“Remove the child.”

“He stays,” Daniel said.

The door opened, and Leonard Price entered with a woman beside him.

Victor’s knuckles whitened around his cane.

“Leonard, think carefully about your daughter.”

The woman stepped forward.

“I’m his daughter.

My home isn’t yours to take.”

Leonard placed a notarized statement beside the ledger.

“Victor ordered me to witness Daniel’s ratification without seeing Daniel sign it.”

“You accepted payment,” Victor replied.

“Tell them that part.”

“I did.

I returned it this morning and gave the banking records to investigators.”

Victor looked toward the directors.

“You remove me, and every one of you loses money.

The company will collapse under lawsuits.”

A director closed the ledger.

“Are you offering us profit in exchange for silence?”

“I am reminding you of your duty.”

Daniel slid the cassette player onto the table and pressed PLAY.

Victor’s younger voice filled the boardroom.

“He will never see you again unless you cooperate.”

No one moved until the tape ended.

Victor reached across the table and knocked the player to the floor.

Noah caught it before it struck the tiles.

“That recording proves nothing!” Victor shouted.

“It proves coercion,” Martin said.

“My sworn statement confirms when and where it was made.”

Victor faced Daniel.

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me a fortune built on the day you took my mother away.”

“And you used it gladly.”

Daniel removed his executive badge and placed it on the table.

“Return every share that belongs to her.

If the rest disappears, let it disappear.”

The eldest director stood.

“I vote to remove Victor Mercer as chairman.”

A second director rose.

“Agreed.”

Then another chair scraped back.

Victor turned toward the door, but two financial investigators entered.

“Victor Mercer, we have orders to seize the company records and freeze the accounts under your control.”

Victor looked at Daniel.

“Stop them, and I can still protect your inheritance.”

“I don’t want an inheritance that cost me my mother.”

An investigator took Victor’s cane and directed him toward the hall.

Victor paused beside Eleanor.

“You’ll lose him again.

People like you always do.”

Eleanor met his eyes.

“No, Victor.

This time he knows who walked away.”

The doors closed behind him.

Daniel turned to embrace her, but only Noah stood there.

“Where’s Grandma?”

Mrs.

Bell picked up a folded note from Eleanor’s empty chair.

Daniel opened it.

I won’t let my return cost Noah his home.

Please don’t follow me.

Noah ran for the elevator.

Through the windows below, Eleanor was already climbing into a taxi.
