Part 2 👇
I opened the window.
Cold air rushed in as the man climbed through — tall, calm, a badge clipped to his jacket.
Dad stood frozen in the hallway.
"Who are you?" Dad's voice cracked for the first time.
The man didn't answer him.
He knelt down and looked at me.
"Are you hurt, Emily?"
I touched my cheek.
It still burned.
I nodded.
He stood slowly and turned to face Dad.
"Ryan Callahan.
You just str*ck a federal witness's child.
That's the last mistake you'll make in this house."
Dad stepped back.
"Federal witness?
Sarah works at a grocery store.
She's nobody."
Mom appeared at the top of the stairs, gripping the railing.
Her face wasn't frightened anymore.
It was something else.
Something I'd never seen before.
"Tell him," the man said quietly.
"Or I will."
Mom looked at Dad for a long moment.
Then she said, "Ryan…
I watched them murd3r someone.
And I testified.
The man I testified against — he has people everywhere."
Dad went pale.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying," Mom whispered, "that you were never supposed to find us."
Dad's legs seemed to give.
He grabbed the wall.
"Then who told him where you were?"
The man in the badge turned slowly and looked directly at me.
My stomach dropped.
Because I suddenly remembered something.
Last week.
Dad's phone.
A number I didn't recognize.
And Dad stepping outside to answer it.
