Dana allowed Emma to remain with me that night, but the emergency custody hearing still went ahead the next morning.

Rachel arrived at court with an attorney and a bandage around her wrist.

Her lawyer placed the photographs before Judge Holloway.

“Mr.

Turner repeatedly left a vulnerable child with a relative he now calls dangerous,” he said.

“His judgment must be examined.”

Judge Holloway looked at me.

“Is that statement accurate?”

“I worked nights and trusted Rachel.

That trust was a terrible mistake.”

Rachel leaned toward her lawyer.

“Ask him about the school.”

The lawyer stood.

“Emma missed six preschool sessions last month.

Were you aware of that?”

“No.”

“Then who was caring for your daughter?”

“Rachel was supposed to take her.”

“So you did not know where Emma was during the day?”

I glanced at Emma sitting beside Vivian.

Her shoes did not reach the floor.

“No,” I said.

“And I will carry that failure for the rest of my life.”

Judge Holloway studied the documents.

“The neighbor’s recording raises serious concerns about Rachel.

It does not automatically settle Mr.

Turner’s fitness.”

Rachel smiled.

The judge continued.

“For forty-eight hours, Emma will reside with Vivian while the home and financial records are reviewed.”

“Your Honor—” I began.

“Forty-eight hours, Mr.

Turner.

Rachel will have no contact with the child.”

Emma slipped from her chair and ran to me.

“Daddy, you said I could stay.”

I dropped to one knee.

“This is not goodbye.

Grandma Vivian will keep you safe, and I will see you tomorrow.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Outside the courtroom, Rachel approached Vivian near the elevators.

“This is still fixable,” Rachel whispered.

Vivian held her handbag against her chest.

“Stay away from us.”

“You wanted Emma, and now you have her.”

“Not this way.”

Rachel glanced down the corridor.

“Tell the judge Michael signed willingly.

I’ll return half the money.”

“You took money from Emma’s account.”

“I was owed it.”

“For locking her outside?”

Rachel stepped closer.

“If you change your story, I’ll show everyone your messages.

You said Michael was unfit before I sent a single photograph.”

“I was grieving and angry.”

“You hated him because Laura chose him over you.”

Vivian’s eyes filled, but her voice remained steady.

“That is true.

It is also why you found me so easy to fool.”

Rachel touched Vivian’s arm.

“Help me, and you keep custody.

Michael never needs to know what you planned.”

“I bought two plane tickets,” Vivian said.

“I planned to take Emma to my sister’s home in Canada once Michael signed.”

Rachel smiled.

“Exactly.

So we both have something to lose.”

Vivian opened her handbag and removed an envelope.

Rachel’s eyes followed it.

“Is that the rest of my payment?”

Vivian held it out.

“Say what you did first.”

“I made Michael look careless.

I staged the photographs, copied his signature, and paid Carla to notarize it.

That’s what you wanted, whether you admit it or not.”

“And the trust money?”

Rachel snatched the envelope.

“Payment for my trouble.”

She tore it open.

Blank paper fell onto the courthouse floor.

“What is this?”

Vivian removed her phone from an outer pocket.

A red light glowed on the screen.

“It’s your voice,” she said.

Rachel’s smile disappeared.

“And this time,” Vivian added, “I recorded every word.”
