“He lied.”
“How?”
“He wanted access to the trust.”
Daniel opened another folder.
A series of financial records appeared.
Blackwell Holdings.
Vale International.
Private accounts.
Shell companies.
I stared.
“What am I looking at?”
“Money.”
“How much?”
“Enough to bury a country.”
I scrolled.
Transfers dated over eleven years.
Millions.
Then billions.
“Where did it go?”
“Offshore.”
“Whose accounts?”
“Mostly Blackwell.”
I looked at him.
“Mostly?”
He nodded.
“Some went through companies controlled by Dad.”
My stomach tightened.
“Jonathan was stealing from Meridian?”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He was moving assets out.”
“For what?”
“To protect them.”
“From Meridian?”
“Yes.”
I stared at the records.
“So Dad wasn't building the network.”
“He was dismantling it.”
“But Mom said he helped build it.”
“He did.”
Daniel looked at me.
“That's the part everyone gets wrong.”
“How?”
“Dad helped create Meridian.”
He pointed to the oldest records.
“But he changed his mind.”
“When?”
“The night Grandfather died.”
I looked at the screen.
“Why?”
“Because he found out what Meridian had become.”
I turned toward Elias.
“And your family?”
Elias smiled.
“Don't pretend your family was innocent.”
Daniel pointed the gun at him.
“Your family profited from every company Meridian destroyed.”
“Of course.”
“People lost everything.”
“Business is war.”
“People died.”
Elias shrugged.
“Collateral.”
My mother stepped forward.
“You sound like Victor.”
Elias's smile disappeared.
“Don't say his name.”
I noticed.
The first sign of fear.
“You're afraid of him.”
Elias didn't answer.
“Where is Victor Ashford?”
Silence.
Daniel looked at me.
“Don't ask.”
“Why?”
“Because we don't know.”
Elias smiled again.
“You'll find out.”
I stared at him.
“What does he want?”
“You.”
I almost laughed.
“Everyone wants me.”
Elias looked at the photograph.
“No.”
“He wants what you remember.”
My skin prickled.
“I don't remember anything.”
“Not yet.”
He turned toward the door.
Daniel raised his weapon.
“You're not leaving.”
Elias stopped.
Then smiled.
“You should worry about your father.”
“What about him?”
“He's already been arrested.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Elias walked out.
The door slammed shut.
I turned to Daniel.
“Is that true?”
He looked at the computer.
A news alert had appeared.
JONATHAN VALE DETAINED IN CONNECTION WITH FINANCIAL CRIMES.
My entire body went numb.
“No.”
My mother covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“They moved faster than we thought.”
“Who?”
“Federal agents.”
“For what?”
“Money laundering.”
“Fraud.”
“Market manipulation.”
“Conspiracy.”
I stared at my father's photograph.
He had been arrested.
The man who had controlled everything.
The man who had lied to me.
The man who had protected me.
The man I wasn't sure I hated anymore.
Gone.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did he know this was coming?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because he planned for it.”
“What?”
Daniel opened another file.
A message appeared.
IF JONATHAN IS ARRESTED, PROTOCOL SEVENTEEN BEGINS.
My stomach tightened.
“What is Protocol Seventeen?”
Daniel looked at me.
“You.”
I shook my head.
“Of course.”
He continued.
“The moment Dad is arrested, control of the protected assets transfers to you.”
“Immediately?”
“Yes.”
“Then why hasn't anything happened?”
“It has.”
“What?”
Daniel pointed to the screen.
A list of accounts appeared.
Hundreds.
Then thousands.
One after another, ownership changed.
BENEFICIARY: ELEANOR CLAIRE VALE.
I stared.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
“Can they really do that?”
“Not legally.”
“Then why is it happening?”
“Because your grandfather designed the system to operate outside normal ownership.”
My head hurt.
“Who controls it now?”
Daniel looked at me.
“You.”
I stared at him.
Then the vault lights went red.
A warning sounded.
SECURITY BREACH.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“We have to go.”
“Where?”
“Upstairs.”
“Why?”
“Because your father needs us.”
I looked at the screen.
The account transfers continued.
Then one final message appeared.
PROTOCOL SEVENTEEN ACTIVE.
Beneath it:
PRIMARY HEIR IDENTIFIED.
My name appeared.
Then another line.
ALL MERIDIAN ASSETS NOW TRACEABLE.
I stared.
Daniel's face went pale.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“They can see you.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
The vault door opened.
Not because someone forced it.
Because someone had entered the correct code.
Jonathan stood there.
Two federal agents had guns pointed at him.
His suit was torn.
His face was exhausted.
But he was standing.
Alive.
“Dad.”
He looked at me.
For a moment, his expression softened.
Then one of the agents grabbed his arm.
“Mr. Vale, you're under arrest.”
My father didn't resist.
He only looked at me.
“Claire.”
I stepped forward.
“What did you do?”
His eyes filled with something I had never seen before.
Regret.
“Everything I did…”
He paused.
“Was to make sure you would never have to become me.”
The agent pulled him away.
I watched him disappear down the corridor.
Then Daniel spoke.
“He's not telling you the whole truth.”
I turned.
“What?”
Daniel looked at the computer.
“Because the files Dad wanted hidden…”
He clicked one last folder.
A list appeared.
Three names.
Jonathan Vale.
Edward Blackwell.
Victor Ashford.
And beside each name was a status.
ACTIVE.
ACTIVE.
ACTIVE.
I stared.
“Victor Ashford is alive.”
Daniel nodded.
Then he opened the next file.
A photograph appeared.
Victor Ashford standing outside a private building.
Beside him was a man.
Older.
Gray hair.
Black coat.
I recognized him immediately.
Edward Blackwell.
And between them stood a third person.
A young man.
Adrian.
The date beneath the photograph was yesterday.
I stared.
“That was taken yesterday.”
Daniel nodded.
I looked closer.
Adrian wasn't smiling.
He was looking directly at the camera.
Then I saw the document he was holding.
A contract.
At the bottom was his signature.
My name appeared above it.
ELEANOR CLAIRE VALE.
I felt the room go cold.
“What's that?”
Daniel looked at me.
“A transfer agreement.”
“Transfer of what?”
He didn't answer.
“Daniel.”
He looked at the document.
“Your inheritance.”
My blood ran cold.
“Adrian signed a contract to take control of it.”
I stared at the photograph.
The man who had attacked me.
The man who claimed he was protecting me.
The man whose father wanted me gone.
Had just signed away my future.
Daniel closed the file.
“Now you know why I didn't trust him.”
I looked toward the corridor where Adrian had disappeared.
For the first time that night, I wasn't angry.
I was afraid.
Because if the contract was real...
Then Adrian had not come to protect me.
He had come to take everything from me.
And somewhere outside the vault, the people who had been waiting seventeen years had finally gotten exactly what they wanted.
Me.
