The first snow of the new year fell silently on a crisp December evening, exactly two years to the day since three terrified runaways had burst through the heavy oak doors. The city square was a pristine white, reflecting festive window displays. Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was a vibrant celebration of life and family.

The massive evergreen tree in the grand hall stood tall, adorned with their journey: Emma’s medical residency pipeline acceptance framed in silver, a miniature scale symbolizing Olivia’s legal advocacy victory, Ava’s published digital art print, and three paper snowflakes preserved from their first night.

John sat in his leather armchair by the study windows, holding spiced cider as he watched the front driveway. A sleek blue sedan pulled up near the grand entrance. The car doors swung open, and the three young women tumbled out into the fresh snow, laughing as they pelted each other with snowballs before rushing toward the heavy doors.

A second later, the foyer echoed with the familiar sound of coats being shed and joyous voices ringing out.

"Dad! If you're hiding in that study with your portfolios, we're confiscating your coffee maker!" Emma called out, bursting into the room with a parchment scroll tied in gold.

John stood up, setting his mug down, feeling an overwhelming swell of gratitude. "I wasn't working, I was just waiting for my world to come home."

He opened his arms wide as his daughters rushed across the room and buried him in a fiercely loving embrace. John looked past their shoulders toward the quiet winter night. The thirty lonely Christmases were gone, replaced by a lifetime of warmth and love. They weren't runaways anymore. They were daughters, protectors, and forever home.
