A crisp, unexpected breeze swept through the courtyard on a Tuesday afternoon, carrying with it a reminder that not all ghosts from the past were content to stay buried. The heavy brass front doorbell rang with a sharp, insistent echo. John stepped out of his study just as Martha moved toward the heavy oak door.

"I've got it, Martha," John said quietly, his voice dropping into its cold, authoritative register. He pulled the door open, expecting a delivery. Instead, standing on the stone porch was a familiar, unwelcome figure—Richard Vance, his tailored suit immaculate, his expression a mask of calculated persistence.

"Mr. Matthews," Vance said smoothly, stepping closer. "I trust you received my correspondence regarding the trust adjustment for Olivia. We need to settle this outside of court."

Before John could utter a syllable, quick, confident footsteps resonated across the marble foyer. Olivia appeared beside him. Her posture was straight, her chin held high, and any trace of past intimidation had completely vanished from her eyes.

"You are wasting your time," Olivia said, her voice steady and ringing with absolute authority. "I am not signing anything, and you have no jurisdiction here."

Vance forced a thin smile. "Dear, you don't understand the financial complexities—"

John cut him off, his towering frame stepping forward until Vance was forced to retreat a step. "You heard my daughter. You are trespassing on private property. If you do not turn around and leave right now, my legal team will file criminal harassment charges and expose every shady financial maneuver your firm has attempted for the last decade. Get off my property."

Realizing he was entirely outmatched by a father utterly consumed by fierce protection, Vance glared once, turned on his heel, and stalked back to his car. The sleek sedan sped down the driveway, leaving nothing behind but dust.
