PART 2 — THE FIRST NIGHT
I locked the bedroom door behind me.
For several seconds, I simply stood there.
The house was silent except for the muffled laughter downstairs.
My hair hung unevenly around my shoulders.
One side reached my collarbone.
The other barely touched my jaw.
I looked ridiculous.
At least, that was what Julian wanted me to believe.
I walked to the bathroom mirror and studied my reflection.
My eyes were dry.
My face was calm.
And somewhere underneath the humiliation, something inside me had finally gone completely still.
For eight years, I had tried to save my marriage.
I had explained Julian’s jokes away.
I had forgiven his arrogance.
I had convinced myself that his constant criticism was simply the personality of a man under pressure.
When he called my salon a hobby, I told myself he was proud of being the bigger earner.
When he mocked my clients, I told myself he didn’t understand my industry.
When he started coming home smelling like Vanessa’s perfume, I told myself there had to be another explanation.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, he had deliberately hurt me.
Not during an argument.
Not by accident.
He had looked directly into my eyes while cutting my hair.
He wanted to humiliate me.
And Vanessa had enjoyed every second.
I reached into the bottom drawer of my dresser and pulled out a small black folder.
It contained copies of documents I had been quietly collecting for the past two weeks.
Bank statements.
Credit-card charges.
Hotel receipts.
Photographs.
Screenshots.
And one printed email.
The email had been sent to me by my attorney that afternoon.
I opened it again.
ELENA, DO NOT CONFRONT HIM YET.
The filing documents are ready. The business records are also ready. We need five more days to complete the transfer and protect your ownership interests.
Five days.
That was why I had said five.
Julian thought I had pulled the number out of nowhere.
He had no idea I had been counting down to something much bigger.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
My phone buzzed.
It was my attorney, Rebecca.
I answered.
“Are you alone?”
“Yes.”
“Did he hurt you?”
I hesitated.
“He cut my hair.”
There was a long silence.
Then Rebecca’s voice hardened.
“With scissors?”
“Yes.”
“Elena, that’s not a joke.”
“I know.”
“Did you record anything?”
“Not tonight.”
“That’s okay.
We already have enough from before.”
I closed my eyes.
“How much longer?”
“Four days for the bank confirmation.
Three for the corporate filing.
The attorney’s letter can go out on the fifth morning.”
“And the loan?”
“Approved.”
I opened my eyes.
“Completely?”
“Completely.
Five hundred thousand dollars.”
I almost smiled.
Not because I needed the money.
Because Julian had spent years telling me that I would never understand serious business.
The loan had been approved against a property he didn’t know I owned.
A commercial building on South Congress Avenue.
I had purchased it two years earlier through a holding company.
Julian had never seen the paperwork.
He thought my third salon rented its space.
It didn’t.
I owned the building.
And after years of quietly reinvesting every dollar the salons produced, I had something even more valuable.
A brand.
Elena Rose Beauty Group.
Three locations.
One education academy.
Twelve full-time employees.
Sixteen independent contractors.
Exclusive distribution agreements.
And a waiting list of clients willing to spend thousands of dollars a year to maintain their image.
Julian’s salary looked impressive to people who didn’t know my numbers.
Mine was an entire machine.
And he had never bothered to look.
I opened my laptop.
An email waited for me.
FROM: Rebecca Morgan
SUBJECT: Final Documents
I opened the attachments.
The first was the divorce petition.
The second was a financial disclosure request.
The third was a notice concerning marital assets.
The fourth was a letter concerning Julian’s unauthorized use of company funds.
My heart beat faster.
I had known for two weeks that he had been moving money.
At first, I thought it was for Vanessa.
Then I discovered the transfers were coming from our joint investment account.
Nearly $87,000.
Hotel suites.
Luxury dinners.
Jewelry.
Flights.
A lease deposit for an apartment in downtown Austin.
Julian wasn’t just cheating.
He was financing his new life with money we had built together.
I forwarded the documents to Rebecca.
Then I opened another folder.
There was one final file.
A recording.
I pressed play.
Julian’s voice filled the bedroom.
“…she’ll never know.”
Vanessa laughed.
“She’s too busy playing salon queen.”
“I already moved the money.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
“You’re sure she can’t touch it?”
“No.
The account isn’t in her name.”
Vanessa laughed again.
Then Julian said something that made my stomach turn.
“If she ever finds out, I’ll tell everyone the business was mine anyway.”
I stopped the recording.
There it was.
The sentence I needed.
I whispered to myself.
“Four more days.”
Then I turned off the light.
For the first time in eight years, I slept peacefully.
