Emily’s face changed.
“What?”
Ryan realized it.
Too late.
But instead of retreating, something inside him cracked.
“I only needed you scared.”
Emily whispered, “You hit my car.”
“You slammed the brakes.”
“You hit my car.”
“You were leaving me!”
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
“You had already moved money I invested years building!”
“It was my inheritance!”
“We were married!”
“You cheated on me!”
“Vanessa understood me!”
“She helped you drug me!”
“She followed instructions!”
Emily stared at him.
“Did she know you were going to hit my car?”
Ryan laughed.
“Vanessa never knew anything until after.”
There it was.
Another piece.
Emily kept going.
“And Pierce?”
Ryan’s expression shifted.
“Pierce knew what he needed to know.”
“Which was?”
“That you needed to stay unavailable.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“For eight months?”
“Until everything was settled.”
“My money?”
“Yes.”
“My house?”
“Yes.”
“The insurance?”
“Yes!”
The word exploded out of him.
Then silence.
Ryan realized how much he had admitted.
His face went pale.
Emily whispered, “Thank you.”
Ryan looked around.
Then he understood.
The doors opened.
Police entered from three directions.
“Ryan Carter! Hands where we can see them!”
Ryan stepped backward.
He looked at Emily.
“You lied.”
She stared at him.
“I learned from you.”
Ryan turned toward the side door.
Officers blocked it.
He ran toward the kitchen corridor.
Another team appeared.
He stopped.
Hands raised.
For one second, I thought it was over.
Then Ryan reached inside his jacket.
Every officer shouted.
“DON’T!”
Emily flinched.
Ryan pulled out a small object.
Not a gun.
A remote key.
He pressed it.
Outside, an explosion of sound erupted.
Car alarms.
Smoke.
Someone shouted through the radio.
“Vehicle fire in the east lot!”
Ryan smiled.
Then the ballroom lights died.
Again.
I jumped from the van.
Ross shouted, “James!”
Gun lights and flashlights cut through darkness.
Officers moved.
Emily screamed.
“Ryan!”
A side door slammed.
By the time emergency lights came on, Ryan was gone.
But this time he had made one mistake.
During the confusion, something had fallen from his jacket.
A hotel key card.
Ross picked it up.
Room 417.
He looked at me.
“Now we know where he’s been sleeping.”
Police reached the hotel twenty-four minutes later.
Room 417 was empty.
But the walls were covered with photographs.
Emily.
Me.
Patricia.
Vanessa.
Naomi.
Detective Ross.
And Lily.
Hundreds of photographs.
On the desk sat a notebook.
The last page contained only one sentence.
If I can’t have my family, Emily doesn’t get to rebuild it.
Below that sentence was a time.
7:30 AM.
And an address.
Emily saw it and stopped breathing.
It was Lily’s elementary school.
Tomorrow morning.
Chapter 10
At 7:00 the next morning, Lily’s school looked normal from the outside.
That was intentional.
No marked police cars.
No flashing lights.
No uniforms near the entrance.
But the building was empty.
Classes had been canceled under the excuse of an emergency maintenance problem.
Officers occupied classrooms.
SWAT teams waited behind neighboring buildings.
Detective Ross positioned surveillance around every street leading to the school.
Emily stayed at a command center three blocks away.
So did Lily.
I stayed with them.
At 7:18, a gray sedan entered the neighborhood.
Stolen plates.
Male driver.
Baseball cap.
Ross’s radio crackled.
“Possible target approaching from the east.”
Emily went pale.
Lily sat at a table coloring.
She didn’t understand why so many grown-ups were around.
She only knew she wasn’t going to school.
“Mommy?”
Emily turned.
“Yes?”
“Can I make Uncle James purple hair?”
I looked at the drawing.
“You better not.”
Lily giggled.
For one beautiful second, the room felt normal.
Then Ross entered.
“He’s here.”
Emily’s smile disappeared.
“Ryan?”
“We believe so.”
Lily looked up.
“Daddy?”
Emily crossed the room immediately.
“Sweetheart, you’re going with Ms. Naomi.”
Lily frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I need to talk to Uncle James.”
“I want to stay.”
Emily kissed her forehead.
“I’ll see you in a few minutes.”
Naomi took Lily into another room.
The moment the door closed, Emily turned to Ross.
“What is happening?”
“The sedan stopped two blocks from the school.”
“Did he get out?”
“Yes.”
“Arrest him.”
“We need positive identification.”
“You know it’s him.”
“We need to do this correctly.”
Emily paced.
“What if he gets away again?”
“He won’t.”
Outside, Ryan walked through an alley wearing a utility vest.
He carried a toolbox.
A surveillance camera caught his face when he removed his cap.
Ross received confirmation.
“It’s him.”
Teams moved.
Ryan must have sensed something.
Maybe the silence.
Maybe the empty parking lot.
Maybe an officer shifted too soon.
He dropped the toolbox and ran.
Police closed both ends of the alley.
He climbed a fence.
Entered a backyard.
Crossed another.
For eleven minutes, nobody at the command center breathed.
Then a radio call came.
“He’s inside a residence.”
Ross swore.
“Occupied?”
“Unknown.”
Emily covered her mouth.
Police surrounded the house.
A negotiator called inside.
No answer.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Then a woman emerged from the back door crying.
Officers pulled her to safety.
She said she had been home alone.
Ryan forced his way inside.
No one else was there.
Thank God.
The negotiator called again.
This time Ryan answered.
His first request was Emily.
Ross said no.
Ryan said, “Then I have nothing to say.”
Emily stepped forward.
“I’ll talk.”
“No.”
“Ross.”
“He wants control.”
“Then give him the illusion.”
Ross stared at her.
Naomi entered after hearing the argument.
“Absolutely not in person.”
“Phone.”
Ross considered.
Finally, he nodded.
They connected the call.
Ryan’s voice came through.
“Emily?”
“I’m here.”
He laughed softly.
“You keep surviving.”
Her face tightened.
“So do you.”
“Where’s Lily?”
“Safe.”
“You always say that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“She belongs with me.”
“She belongs where she isn’t afraid.”
Ryan became silent.
Emily continued.
“It’s over.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You think prison changes what happened?”
“No.”
“You think you can become a family again?”
“I already am.”
That hurt him.
We heard it in his breathing.
“You poisoned her against me.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Ryan, she watched you hit me with lies for months.”
“I never hit you.”
“You hit my car.”
Silence.
“And you hit Lily.”
“She needed discipline.”
“She needed a father.”
“I am her father.”
“Then start acting like one.”
Ryan’s voice sharpened.
“You don’t tell me how to raise my child.”
“She is not property.”
“I gave her everything.”
“You took her mother.”
“I gave her stability.”
“You made her grieve a living woman.”
That silenced him.
Emily’s eyes filled.
“She cried for me every night.”
“You don’t know that.”
“She told me.”
Ryan’s breathing became louder.
“She asked why I chose heaven over her.”
No answer.
“You told our daughter I abandoned her.”
“I needed her to move on.”
“For Vanessa?”
“For us.”
“There is no us.”
“There was.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice became steady.
“There was you controlling me.”
Ryan said nothing.
“There was me making excuses.”
Silence.
“There was Lily learning to stay quiet so you wouldn’t get angry.”
Silence.
“There was Vanessa believing whatever made her life easier.”
