The officer took Brooke's phone and scrolled slowly through the folder.

His expression didn't change.

But he stopped on one file and looked up at Grant.

"Sir, I need you to step outside."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"Whatever she showed you, she took it out of context."

"Outside.

Now."

Grant's mother grabbed my arm as he was led toward the door.

"You did this," she hissed.

"You turned her against him.

That folder — she made all of it up."

I pulled my arm free.

"She made up the recordings?

She made up his voice?"

The woman went quiet for the first time all night.

What I didn't know yet was what was actually in that folder.

Brooke hadn't just saved photos of bruises.

She hadn't just saved angry messages.

She had recorded a phone call.

A long one.

Between Grant and someone none of us expected.

And in that recording, Grant wasn't talking about Brooke.

He was talking about me.

About the house.

About my savings.

About how much longer he thought I would "be around."

When the officer came back inside, he wasn't alone.

He had a second officer with him.

And he asked Brooke one more question — quietly, so Grant couldn't hear.

"Is there anyone else in danger?"

Brooke looked at me.

And I felt something cold move through my chest.

---

What was Grant planning — and who was he really talking to?

The full truth is darker than anyone expected.
