Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.
Michael froze.
Thomas moved toward the window.
Emily came downstairs.
“Are you expecting someone?”
“No.”
Michael approached the door.
A courier stood outside.
One envelope.
No return address.
Michael opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Taken less than ten minutes earlier.
Michael standing in his own kitchen.
Rachel beside him.
The picture had been taken through the window.
On the back:
THE HAYES WAR IS OVER.
Michael stared.
Below it was another sentence.
THE ORION WAR HAS JUST BEGUN.
Then Sophie screamed upstairs.
Michael dropped the photograph.
“DADDY!”
He ran.
Rachel behind him.
Thomas drew his weapon.
Michael burst into Sophie’s room.
Lucas stood beside the window.
Sophie was pointing toward her bed.
Nothing was there.
Michael rushed to her.
“What happened?”
“A man.”
“What man?”
“He was outside.”
Michael looked through the window.
Empty yard.
“Did you see his face?”
Sophie shook her head.
“He had a hat.”
“What did he do?”
She held something out.
A small silver pin.
Michael took it.
A star surrounded by a circle.
Rachel went white.
Orion.
Michael looked at Sophie.
“Where did you get this?”
“He threw it through the window.”
Michael turned toward the glass.
A tiny circular hole.
Rachel whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Lucas stepped closer.
“There’s something written on it.”
Michael turned the pin over.
Four tiny words had been engraved into the metal.
BRING SOPHIE TO GENEVA.
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“No.”
Rachel stared.
Michael closed his fist around the pin.
“No more running.”
He looked at Lucas.
Then Sophie.
Then Rachel.
“They spent decades teaching this family that fear was protection.”
His expression hardened.
“That ends with us.”
Outside, a black sedan disappeared around the corner.
Inside sat a woman.
She lowered binoculars.
Beside her was a photograph of Sophie.
The driver asked:
“Will Michael bring her?”
The woman smiled.
“No.”
“Then what now?”
“That was never the test.”
She opened a folder.
Inside was Michael’s entire family history.
Margaret.
William.
David.
Rachel.
Lucas.
Sophie.
The woman closed it.
“We needed to know what kind of father he would choose to be.”
“And?”
Her smile disappeared.
“He chose the children.”
The driver nodded.
“Just like Charles predicted.”
The woman looked back toward the Hayes house.
“Activate the final protocol.”
“What about Sophie?”
“Leave her alone.”
The driver looked surprised.
“For now?”
The woman shook her head.
“Forever.”
“Then who is the target?”
She opened another photograph.
Michael Hayes.
“Her father.”
And inside the house, unaware of the decision just made miles away, Michael wrapped both of his children in his arms.
Lucas held Sophie.
Rachel held Michael.
For the first time, the Hayes family understood the lesson generations before them had refused to learn.
Power was not the inheritance worth protecting.
Neither was money.
Nor a name.
Nor an empire.
The only inheritance that mattered was whether their children would be forced to repeat the same mistakes.
Michael looked at Lucas.
Then Sophie.
“No more secrets.”
Rachel nodded.
“No more disappearing.”
Emily whispered:
“No more deciding someone else can’t handle the truth.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
Michael looked at everyone.
“We end it differently.”
Outside, thunder rolled across the Chicago sky.
And somewhere far away, a computer screen came alive.
ORION FINAL PROTOCOL.
TARGET CONFIRMED:
MICHAEL HAYES.
STATUS:
ACTIVE.
