Michael stared at the screen.

Father: EDWARD LANGFORD.

His mind rejected the words.

“No.”

David leaned against the console.

“Hard to read?”

Michael pointed his gun at him.

“Shut up.”

Lucas sat frozen.

William looked broken.

Michael turned toward him.

“Tell me it’s fake.”

William couldn’t.

“Dad.”

Nothing.

“Tell me.”

William’s eyes filled.

“I raised you.”

Michael’s face changed.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“Michael—”

“IS EDWARD LANGFORD MY FATHER?”

William closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The word hit harder than a bullet.

Michael backed away.

Lucas whispered:

“Dad?”

Michael immediately looked at him.

That one word anchored him.

Dad.

Whatever blood said, Lucas knew who he was.

Michael forced himself to breathe.

David smiled.

“Family is complicated.”

Michael turned the gun toward him.

“You knew.”

“For years.”

“How?”

“Mother told me.”

“Margaret.”

David nodded.

Michael’s anger sharpened.

“She isn’t your mother?”

“She is.”

“Then we’re half brothers.”

“Yes.”

Michael stared at William.

“You knew the entire time?”

“Yes.”

“And you raised me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

William looked shocked.

“Because you were my son.”

“No. Why didn’t you tell me?”

William stepped forward.

“Because blood didn’t matter to me.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Then why hide it?”

William stopped.

Exactly.

Because it had mattered.

Maybe not emotionally.

But politically.

Financially.

Organizationally.

David walked toward the scanner.

“Now you understand why Edward wants me.”

Michael looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because he discovered the truth only recently.”

Michael frowned.

“Edward didn’t know?”

“No.”

William answered.

“Margaret never told him.”

Michael felt sick.

“Did Mom have an affair?”

William looked away.

David laughed.

“Come on, Dad. Tell the whole story.”

William’s fists tightened.

“Margaret and Edward were together before she married me.”

Michael stared.

“Before?”

“Yes.”

“She was pregnant?”

“She didn’t know.”

Michael processed it.

Margaret had married William believing Michael would eventually be his biological son?

Or perhaps discovered the truth later.

“How old was I when she knew?”

“Three months.”

“And you stayed?”

William looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I loved you.”

Michael’s anger faltered.

William continued.

“I changed your diapers. I held you when you had pneumonia. I taught you to ride a bicycle. I sat outside your room every night for six months after Margaret disappeared because you were afraid she would come back and find the door locked.”

Michael’s eyes filled despite himself.

William’s voice broke.

“I am your father.”

Michael swallowed.

“Then start acting like one.”

William lowered his head.

“You’re right.”

David rolled his eyes.

“Touching.”

Michael turned.

“Let Lucas go.”

“No.”

“You have me.”

“I need both.”

Michael looked at the scanner.

“But if Edward is my biological father, the Hayes succession protocol shouldn’t recognize me.”

David smiled.

“Exactly.”

Michael understood.

“Which means Margaret lied about what the scanner does.”

“Yes.”

“What does it really do?”

David looked at Lucas.

“It doesn’t verify Hayes blood.”

Michael’s stomach tightened.

“It verifies Margaret’s bloodline.”

William whispered:

“David.”

David ignored him.

“Margaret built the Continuity Agreement around herself.”

Michael stared.

“Why?”

“Because she trusted no one.”

The doors slammed shut.

Steel shutters covered the windows.

David pressed another button.

“Now we wait.”

“For what?”

“For Mother.”

Michael laughed.

“She isn’t coming.”

“She will.”

“How do you know?”

David looked at Lucas.

“Because she has spent twenty-two years pretending she doesn’t care about her family.”

His smile faded.

“But she always comes when one of us is about to die.”

Michael felt cold.

Meanwhile, Rachel stared at Margaret.

“Michael is Edward’s son?”

Margaret said nothing.

Edward looked at her.

The room changed.

“What?”

Victoria turned toward her father.

Edward’s face had gone blank.

“What did she say?”

Rachel slowly looked at him.

“You didn’t know.”

Edward stared at Margaret.

“Michael?”

Margaret’s eyes closed.

Edward stepped closer.

“Michael Hayes?”

“Yes.”

“My son?”

“Yes.”

Edward slapped her.

Thomas moved.

Cole grabbed him.

Margaret didn’t defend herself.

Edward stared at his own hand.

Then at her.

“Thirty-nine years.”

Margaret’s cheek reddened.

“Yes.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“William knew.”

“Yes.”

Edward laughed.

It sounded broken.

“My son grew up calling another man Dad.”

Margaret looked at him.

“William was his father.”

“I was his father!”

“No.”

Margaret’s voice hardened.

“You contributed blood.”

Edward froze.

“William gave him a childhood.”

“You stole that from me.”

“I protected Michael from you.”

Edward stared.

“From me?”

“You were already becoming dangerous.”

“So you chose William?”

“I chose Michael.”

Edward looked as if he might shoot her.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Michael is my…”

She stopped.

Margaret looked at her.

“Half brother.”

Victoria went white.

Rachel stared at Victoria.

Victoria looked horrified.

“Michael and I…”

Rachel understood.

Victoria’s relationship with Michael.

The engagement.

Everything.

Victoria stumbled backward.

“No.”

Margaret answered quickly.

“You and Michael are not biologically related.”

Everyone stared.

Edward turned.

“What?”

Margaret looked at Victoria.

“Edward is not your biological father.”

Victoria’s mouth opened.

No sound emerged.

Edward stared at Margaret.

“What are you talking about?”

Margaret whispered:

“Ask your wife.”

Edward’s face changed.

“My wife is dead.”

Margaret said nothing.

Edward laughed once.

Then stopped.

“No.”

The pattern.

Everyone understood it now.

Rachel whispered:

“Is she alive too?”

Margaret nodded.

Victoria looked like she might collapse.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Margaret didn’t answer.

Victoria screamed:

“WHERE IS SHE?”

“Switzerland.”

Victoria stared.

Edward looked shattered.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She came to me after discovering what you had become.”

Edward backed away.

Margaret continued.

“She wanted Victoria out.”

“Then why did she leave me?”

Victoria whispered.

Margaret looked at her.

“Because Edward threatened to kill her if she took you.”

Edward shouted:

“LIE!”

Margaret turned.

“Should I play the recording?”

Edward stopped.

Silence.

Victoria understood.

Her father’s silence was the confession.

She stepped away from him.

“You threatened Mom.”

Edward’s voice cracked.

“She was taking you.”

“You disappeared anyway!”

“I thought you were safer without me!”

Victoria laughed through tears.

“You all keep deciding what children can survive.”

Sophie stood beside Rachel.

Quiet.

Listening.

Victoria looked at her.

And suddenly the entire tragedy became clear.

Adults had lied.

Adults had manipulated.

Adults had used children as justification for choices children never asked them to make.

Victoria had continued the cycle.

She had terrorized Lucas and Sophie because she was terrified of losing Michael.

She looked at Rachel.

“I became him.”

Rachel said nothing.

Victoria looked at Edward.

“I became you.”

Edward’s face hardened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

She wiped her tears.

“And I hate you for that.”

Margaret’s phone beeped.

SITE TWELVE — SECOND KEY PRESENT.

Rachel looked at her.

“Michael?”

“Yes.”

“Then we move.”

Edward grabbed his gun.

“I’m coming.”

“No,” Margaret said.

Edward stared.

“That’s my son.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“You learned that thirty seconds ago.”

“He is still my son.”

“And Michael gets to decide what that means.”

Edward’s jaw tightened.

Rachel stepped between them.

“She’s right.”

Edward looked at her.

Rachel continued:

“Michael has had enough people making decisions about his family.”

Edward stared.

Then slowly lowered the gun.

“Fine.”

Rachel looked at Cole.

“We go together.”

Cole nodded.

Thomas checked the magazine in his pistol.
