Emily held Sophie.

Rachel crouched.

“Sophie.”

“I want to come.”

“No.”

“Lucas is there.”

“I know.”

“I want my brother.”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“I’m bringing him home.”

“Promise?”

Rachel remembered Margaret hesitating earlier.

She refused to make a promise she couldn’t control.

“I promise I will do everything I can.”

Sophie hugged her.

Rachel held on.

Then stood.

Victoria stepped forward.

“I’m coming.”

Rachel looked at her.

“No.”

“I know Site Twelve.”

Margaret turned.

“How?”

Victoria looked at Edward.

“My father took me there when I was thirteen.”

Edward froze.

“You remember?”

“Everything.”

Margaret’s face changed.

“What did he show you?”

Victoria looked at her.

“The room under the classrooms.”

Margaret went pale.

“What room?”

Edward looked away.

Victoria realized something.

“You didn’t know.”

Margaret stepped toward her.

“What room?”

Victoria answered:

“The Founders’ Room.”

Margaret stared at Edward.

“You opened it?”

Edward said nothing.

“You swore you destroyed it.”

“I lied.”

Margaret’s fear became visible.

Rachel asked:

“What is the Founders’ Room?”

Margaret whispered:

“The reason I staged my death.”

At Site Twelve, David opened a hidden staircase beneath the classroom.

Michael watched.

Lucas stayed beside him.

William followed.

They descended.

The walls changed from crumbling plaster to reinforced concrete.

At the bottom stood a black door.

Seven names were carved into it.

HAYES.

LANGFORD.

CARTER.

MERCER.

BISHOP.

REED.

VALE.

Michael stopped.

“Carter?”

David smiled.

“Emily’s family.”

Michael stared.

“And Reed?”

David nodded.

“Cole’s mother’s family.”

Michael looked at him.

“Nathan Cole?”

“Different name. Same bloodline.”

Michael felt sick.

Everyone had been connected before they even knew one another.

David placed his hand on the door.

Nothing.

Then Lucas.

Nothing.

Michael frowned.

“You said we were the keys.”

“Two of three.”

Michael stared.

“Who’s the third?”

David smiled.

“The founder.”

Footsteps echoed behind them.

Michael turned.

Margaret Hayes stood at the top of the staircase.

Rachel beside her.

Thomas.

Cole.

Victoria.

Edward.

Margaret stared down at David.

“It’s over.”

David smiled.

“No, Mom.”

He placed a gun against Lucas’s head.

Michael moved.

“DON’T!”

David’s smile disappeared.

“Open the door.”

Margaret stared at Lucas.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Michael looked at her.

“What?”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I can’t.”

David pressed the gun closer.

“You will.”

Margaret whispered:

“If that door opens, thousands of people could die.”

Michael stared at her.

“My son could die.”

“I know.”

“Then OPEN IT!”

Margaret looked at him.

And for the first time, Michael saw the terrible mathematics she had lived by for decades.

One life against thousands.

Family against consequences.

Love against control.

Margaret whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Michael’s face changed.

David smiled.

“There she is.”

He looked at Michael.

“The real Margaret Hayes.”

Then Lucas did something nobody expected.

He drove his heel down onto David’s foot.

David shouted.

Lucas dropped.

Michael lunged.

A gunshot exploded.

Rachel screamed.

David fell backward.

Michael grabbed Lucas and rolled behind a concrete pillar.

Gunfire erupted.

Thomas fired.

Cole dragged Margaret down.

Edward shot one of David’s men.

Victoria pulled William behind cover.

Then silence.

Michael looked at Lucas.

“Are you hit?”

Lucas shook violently.

“No.”

Michael pulled him against his chest.

“I’ve got you.”

“Dad…”

“I’ve got you.”

Across the room, David lay on the floor.

Blood spread beneath him.

Margaret approached.

“David?”

His eyes opened.

He laughed weakly.

“You still won’t open it.”

“No.”

David coughed.

“Then tell them.”

Margaret froze.

Michael stood.

“Tell us what?”

David smiled through blood.

“What’s behind the door.”

Margaret said nothing.

David looked at Lucas.

“The organization isn’t behind it.”

Michael stared.

“Then what is?”

David’s smile faded.

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

David looked at Margaret.

“That she ordered Rachel’s crash.”
