Michael stepped forward.

“Okay.”

Rachel grabbed him.

“Michael.”

“I’m not gambling with our son.”

David smiled.

Michael placed his hand on the first scanner.

GREEN.

HAYES DNA CONFIRMED.

William brought Lucas forward.

The boy was shaking.

Michael looked at him.

“Hey.”

Lucas looked up.

“Dad?”

“Remember what I told you?”

Lucas nodded through tears.

“Being scared doesn’t mean we stop thinking.”

Michael smiled.

“That’s my boy.”

Lucas placed his hand on the second scanner.

GREEN.

SUCCESSION DNA CONFIRMED.

The floor vibrated.

A steel vault opened.

David’s eyes filled with triumph.

Inside was one table.

One box.

And a computer.

David rushed forward.

He opened the box.

Empty.

His smile vanished.

“What?”

Rachel stared.

“It’s empty?”

David turned toward William.

“WHERE IS IT?”

William looked genuinely shocked.

“I don’t know.”

David grabbed him.

“You said the archive was here!”

“It was!”

Michael looked at the computer.

One video file appeared automatically.

MARGARET HAYES.

His mother.

Dead for twenty-two years.

Michael clicked.

Margaret appeared on screen.

“If you are seeing this, then someone has forced two Hayes descendants to open the vault.”

David froze.

Michael stared.

Margaret continued.

“Which means my oldest son failed.”

David’s face changed.

“Mother…”

Margaret looked into the camera.

“David, if it is you…”

Michael slowly turned toward his brother.

“…I knew what you were becoming.”

David stepped backward.

Margaret continued.

“I moved the archive.”

Rachel whispered:

“Where?”

Margaret smiled sadly.

“To the one person William and David would never suspect.”

Michael’s heart pounded.

“Who?”

The video continued.

“She has spent years pretending not to know anything.”

Michael froze.

A photograph appeared.

Emily Carter.

Thomas stared.

“My sister?”

Margaret continued.

“Emily Carter is not simply a nanny.”

Everyone stared.

“She is the legal custodian of the Hayes Archive.”

Michael stopped breathing.

David looked furious.

Then Margaret said the sentence that changed everything.

“And if David is alive, Emily already knows exactly what to do.”

Cut to black.

Michael immediately called Emily.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Rachel tried.

Nothing.

Thomas went pale.

“Where are the kids?”

Michael froze.

Sophie.

She was still with Emily.

His phone rang.

Emily.

Michael answered instantly.

“Emily!”

But a man’s voice responded.

“Mr. Hayes.”

Michael stared.

“Who is this?”

“You don’t know me.”

“Where are Emily and Sophie?”

“Alive.”

David’s expression changed.

For the first time…

he looked afraid.

The stranger continued.

“David Hayes has spent ten years pretending to control an organization that was never his.”

Michael looked at David.

“Who are you?”

The man laughed softly.

“Ask David.”

Michael held out the phone.

“Who is this?”

David’s face went white.

“No.”

The voice continued.

“Tell him, David.”

David slowly shook his head.

Michael shouted:

“WHO IS HE?”

David whispered one name.

“Edward Langford.”

Rachel froze.

Victoria’s father.

The man officially dead for eight years.

The voice laughed.

“Hello, Michael.”

Michael stared at the phone.

Edward Langford continued:

“Bring David to me.”

“Why?”

“Because he stole my organization.”

“And Emily?”

“She has something that belongs to me.”

“The archive?”

“No.”

Edward’s voice became colder.

“Victoria.”

Michael froze.

“Victoria is in police custody.”

“Not anymore.”

Michael looked at Cole.

Cole immediately called his unit.

Edward continued.

“My daughter disappeared from custody forty minutes ago.”

Michael’s stomach dropped.

“And Sophie?”

“Safe.”

“For how long?”

“That depends on you.”

Michael stared at David.

“What do you want?”

Edward answered:

“The man who destroyed my family.”

A pause.

“Bring me David before sunrise.”

The line went dead.

Michael slowly lowered the phone.

David backed away.

“No.”

Michael stared at his brother.

For the first time in ten years, Shepherd looked terrified.

Rachel moved beside Michael.

Thomas checked his weapon.

Cole called for backup.

William held Lucas and cried.

And somewhere outside Chicago, Emily Carter stood inside a dark room with Sophie hidden behind her.

Across from her sat Victoria Langford.

Bruised.

Terrified.

Alive.

Victoria stared at Emily.

“My father is alive?”

Emily slowly opened the Hayes Archive.

“Yes.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with fear.

“Then we have a bigger problem than David.”

Emily looked at her.

“What?”

Victoria whispered:

“My father didn’t create the organization.”

Emily froze.

“Who did?”

Victoria looked toward Sophie.

Then back at Emily.

“Michael’s mother.”

Margaret Hayes.

And in the darkness behind them…

someone began to clap.

Slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Emily spun around.

An elderly woman stepped into the light.

White hair.

Elegant black coat.

A familiar face from the photograph Michael kept beside his bed.

Sophie stared.

The woman smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Emily stopped breathing.

Victoria whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

The woman’s smile widened.

“No.”

Margaret Hayes looked toward the frightened little girl.

“Impossible is what this family has been trained to believe.”

Sophie backed away.

Margaret extended her hand.

“Come here, Sophie.”

Emily immediately stepped between them.

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

And forty miles away, Michael Hayes had no idea that the mother he had mourned for twenty-two years was standing in the same room as his daughter.

Alive.

Waiting.

And apparently holding the one secret powerful enough to explain every death, every disappearance, and every lie that had torn the Hayes family apart.
