When I confronted her, my stepson revealed a chilling secret about what happens when I leave for work.

My five-year-old daughter, Lily, had barely eaten all day.

When I stepped into the house after work, I saw her crying beside the dining table.

My wife, Vanessa, stood over her with an icy glare.

'You do not take food from my son,' she barked.

Lily's tiny hand held half a dinner roll.

Vanessa's seven-year-old son, Mason, sat with a full plate in front of him.

'I was hungry,' Lily whimpered.

Vanessa snatched the roll from her trembling fingers.

'I told you that was Mason's.'

Mason lowered his eyes, uneasy.

'Mom, she can have mine.'

'Stay out of this,' Vanessa snapped.

Lily reached toward the bread basket again.

That was when Vanessa sl@pped her hard across the face.

Lily stumbled back into a chair, clutching her red cheek.

'Mom!' Mason yelled, jumping up.

I dropped my work bag to the floor.

'What did you just do?'

Vanessa froze, her face going pale.

'Michael...

she was st3aling.'

'She is five years old!' I shouted.

Lily hurried to me, her whole body trembling as I lifted her up.

Then Mason spoke up quietly.

'She didn't st3al anything.'

Vanessa glared at him.

'Mason, be quiet.'

'Mom told Lily she wasn't allowed to eat dinner at all,' Mason said, looking straight at me.

My stomach dropped into a dark pit.

I set Lily behind me and stepped straight toward Vanessa.

'Did you st@rve my daughter?'

'Don't start with me, Michael,' she sneered.

I sl@pped Vanessa across the face, sending her stumbling against the table.

'You put your hands on my child,' I hissed.

Vanessa stared at me in total disbelief.

Then Lily pulled lightly on my sleeve.

'Daddy...

sometimes she locks the food in the pantry so I can't eat,' she sobbed.

Vanessa's face went entirely white.

Then Mason stepped closer and whispered, 'Dad...

that's not even the worst thing she does when you're at work.'
