Officer Ruiz entered first, followed by a family-services worker named Dana Brooks.

Vanessa pointed at me.

“He attacked me in front of the children.”

Ruiz looked at my open hand.

“Did you raise your hand to your wife?”

“Yes,” I said.

“I lost control, and I was wrong.”

Vanessa blinked.

She had expected a denial.

“But look at Lily’s cheek,” I continued.

“Check the laundry room.

Listen to Mason’s recording.”

Dana crouched beside Lily.

“May I speak with you somewhere quiet?”

Lily held tighter to my leg.

“Can Daddy come?”

“Not for the first few minutes,” Dana said gently.

“But you can keep the door open.”

Mason stepped forward.

“I’ll go with her.”

Vanessa caught his shoulder.

“You’re staying with me.”

“Take your hand off him,” Dana said.

Vanessa released him.

Officer Ruiz inspected the laundry-room door.

“There’s no outside lock.”

“There was,” Mason said.

“Mom took it off this morning.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Vanessa replied.

Mason unlocked the old phone and showed him a photograph.

A metal sliding latch was fixed across the outside of the door.

“I took that yesterday,” Mason said.

“There’s another picture of Lily inside.”

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“A seven-year-old can alter photographs.”

“The original file has a date and location,” Ruiz said.

“We’ll preserve the phone.”

“You cannot take my property.”

“Mason says the phone was given to him,” Ruiz replied.

“A technician can sort out ownership.”

Dana returned with Lily.

“Both children will need medical assessments tonight.”

“I’m their mother,” Vanessa said.

“I’m going with Mason.”

“No,” Mason whispered.

Vanessa turned on him.

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

Dana placed herself between them.

“Neither child will leave alone with either adult tonight.”

My chest tightened.

“Lily shouldn’t be taken from me.”

“You admitted using physical force against Vanessa,” Dana said.

“Until the emergency hearing, we need a safety plan.”

“I told the truth.”

“And that matters,” she replied.

“But it doesn’t remove the concern.”

The next afternoon, I stood before Judge Hart while Vanessa’s attorney played a hallway video.

It showed me confronting Vanessa and raising my hand.

It did not show what she had done to Lily moments earlier.

Vanessa dabbed her eyes.

“Michael has always had a temper.”

“That is not true,” I said.

Her attorney stood.

“Mr.

Carter admitted the incident.”

“I did, and I am ashamed of it.

But Vanessa confined Lily and denied her food.”

“The alleged recording has not been authenticated,” the attorney replied.

“The latch was removed before officers arrived.”

Judge Hart raised her hand.

“Enough.”

She ordered both children temporarily placed with Vanessa’s mother, Eleanor, while the evidence was examined.

Vanessa and I would receive separate supervised visits.

Outside the courtroom, Vanessa stopped beside me.

“You see?” she whispered.

“Mason will take back every word once he understands what disobedience costs.”

“You’re not going near him alone.”

“My mother believes me.”

That evening, Dana allowed me a video call with the children from Eleanor’s house.

Lily leaned close to the screen.

“Daddy, I know this place.”

“You’ve been there before?”

She nodded.

“Vanessa used to leave me in Grandma Eleanor’s basement.”

Mason’s face appeared beside hers.

“That’s where Uncle Daniel kept all the papers.”
