Shoes by the door.
A plastic pumpkin from Halloween.
Normal life.
Daniel found the loose floorboard inside the bedroom closet.
Underneath:
A red metal box.
No lock.
Vincent opened it.
Photographs.
Documents.
An old phone.
A passport under Michael Carter’s name.
Another under Michael Vale.
Then a photograph of Michael standing beside a much younger Vincent.
Vincent stared.
“I knew him.”
Daniel looked over.
“When?”
“Twenty years ago.”
“Where?”
“My father’s house.”
Michael stood in the background of a family photograph.
Barely twenty.
Security uniform.
Vincent remembered him now.
Quiet.
Always near Carlo’s office.
There was an envelope beneath the photograph.
Written:
FOR RACHEL — IF THEY FIND ME
Vincent opened it.
Michael’s handwriting.
Rachel,
If I am dead, do not believe the accident story.
Vincent went still.
Daniel leaned closer.
Carlo Romano did not die from his heart.
Vincent stopped breathing.
His father had died eleven years earlier.
Officially heart failure.
He read on.
Someone poisoned him slowly.
Daniel whispered:
“Jesus.”
Michael continued.
I found the records.
I took copies.
Carlo knew before the end.
Vincent’s hands tightened.
He made me promise not to give them to Vincent until I knew who inside the house was involved.
Vincent stared.
His father had known.
Had chosen not to tell him.
The next page contained names.
Doctors.
Accountants.
Security.
Payments.
Then one name circled twice.
Daniel Cross.
The room went silent.
Vincent slowly turned.
Daniel stood behind him.
Pale.
His security chief.
His closest lieutenant for fifteen years.
The man who had brought him Rachel’s hospital file.
The man who had stood beside Lily that morning.
Daniel stared at the paper.
“No.”
Vincent’s face became unreadable.
“Explain.”
“That isn’t me.”
“Your name.”
“I know.”
“Then explain.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I was twenty-two when Carlo died.
I wasn’t security chief.
I barely worked outer detail.”
Vincent stared.
“Yet Michael circled you.”
“I don’t know why.”
Ruiz, who had accompanied them, stepped between the silence.
Vincent did.
Below Daniel’s name:
NOT INVOLVED.
WATCH HIM.
THEY WILL TRY TO USE HIM.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Vincent looked up.
The note continued.
Daniel saw something the night Carlo collapsed.
He doesn’t know what he saw.
Daniel whispered:
“What?”
Vincent read.
Ask him about the woman in the blue coat.
Daniel’s face went blank.
Then memory arrived.
Slowly.
Horribly.
“I remember.”
Vincent stared.
“Who?”
Daniel sat down.
“The night your father died.”
“Yes.”
“There was a woman leaving the east corridor.”
“What woman?”
“Blue coat.”
“Name.”
“I never saw her face.”
“Daniel.”
“She dropped something.”
“What?”
He stared at the red box.
“A hospital badge.”
Vincent’s pulse slowed.
“Which hospital?”
Daniel looked at him.
“St.
Catherine.”
The same hospital Rachel had just disappeared from.
Ruiz swore softly.
Vincent continued reading.
Michael’s final paragraph:
If Rachel is ever threatened, it means they finally found the copies.
Do not trust anyone who tells you I died drunk.
And if Lily is old enough to understand this someday, tell her I did not leave because I wanted to.
Vincent stared.
Lily.
Michael had written her name.
But Michael died when Lily was two.
He knew enough to anticipate danger years later.
Ruiz looked at the old phone.
“We need forensics.”
Vincent nodded.
Then Daniel found something taped beneath the lid.
A hospital bracelet.
Name:
RACHEL CARTER.
Date:
Last night.
Vincent frowned.
“She put this here before going to the hospital?”
Ruiz examined it.
“No.”
She looked at the adhesive.
“This was added recently.”
Daniel stared.
“Someone came here after Rachel was admitted.”
The apartment door clicked.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the hallway.
Wet coat.
Pale face.
Hospital gown visible underneath.
Rachel.
Alive.
She leaned against the frame.
Vincent stared.
“Rachel.”
She looked exhausted.
“Where’s Lily?”
“Safe.”
Rachel closed her eyes in relief.
Then opened them.
“Did Natalie get to her?”
“No.”
“Thank God.”
Ruiz rushed forward.
“You need medical care.”
Rachel shook her head.
“Not until he knows.”
She pointed at Vincent.
He stood.
“Knows what?”
Rachel looked at the photograph of Michael.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at Vincent.
“My husband did not steal from your father.”
“I know.”
“He was trying to protect him.”
“I know that too.”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t.”
Vincent waited.
Rachel whispered:
“Carlo Romano was not the target.”
The room went quiet.
“Then who was?”
Rachel looked directly at Vincent.
“You.”
And Vincent suddenly understood why someone had started poisoning him again.
Not because an old conspiracy had returned.
Because it had never ended.
