William didn't wait.
He grabbed the edge of the drain cover with both hands and pulled it free.
The metal scraped against the tile floor.
Eva pressed herself against the wall, still crying.
The space beneath was barely large enough for a person.
But there she was.
Lily.
Curled on her side.
Thin.
Shaking.
Her clothes were dirty and her lips were cracked dry.
William reached down and pulled her up into his arms.
"Lily…
how long have you been down there?"
She could barely speak.
Her voice came out in broken pieces.
"Three…
three days."
William turned to look at his wife.
She hadn't moved.
She was standing in the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed, watching.
Not crying.
Not shocked.
Just…
watching.
"You knew," William said.
His voice was low and quiet.
That made it worse.
She said nothing.
"YOU KNEW SHE WAS DOWN THERE?"
Still nothing.
Then little Eva pulled on her father's sleeve and whispered something that made the whole room go cold.
"Daddy…
Mommy said if I told anyone, she would put me down there too."
William looked at his daughter.
Then at Lily.
Then slowly back at his wife.
And the expression on his wife's face in that moment was not guilt.
It was something far more frightening than that.
