Leon held the flash drive above the medicine cart.
“Tell them to leave, Victor.”
Victor’s eyes stayed on it.
“What did you put there?”
“The payments, the threats, the officials you bought.
Enough to bury the Romano name.”
Clara faced Victor.
“Is he lying?”
“No.”
The single word emptied the corridor of sound.
Lena stepped between Margaret and Leon.
“You knew he was corrupt.”
Victor’s shoulders lowered.
“I knew Leon diverted money from one company.
I covered it and made him repay it.”
“You protected him.”
“He saved my life when we were young.”
“And tonight I saved yours,” Lena said.
“Will you hide my truth someday too?”
Victor looked at her bruised throat.
“No.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because I’m done asking innocent people to carry the cost of my loyalty.”
Leon laughed.
“A noble speech from a frightened man.”
Victor took out his phone and called a number.
“This is Victor Romano.
I am surrendering my records to the district attorney.
All of them.”
Leon’s smile vanished.
“You would destroy yourself?”
“I would rather answer for what I did than let you threaten another woman for what you did.”
“You won’t last a week without me.”
“I lasted three seconds without you.
Lena gave me those.”
Detective Ross reached for Victor’s phone.
Dmitri blocked him with one arm.
Nadia pointed her camera at Ross.
“Please try that again.
The district attorney is watching live.”
Ross stepped back.
Clara moved toward Leon.
“Where is Owen?”
“Still bargaining?”
“No.
Asking.”
“Owen discovered the charity transfers.
He threatened to expose me, so I paid him to disappear.”
Clara’s face crumpled.
“You told me he was being held.”
“I showed you what fear made you willing to believe.”
A voice came from Nadia’s phone.
“You never paid me enough to stay gone, Leon.”
Clara seized the device.
“Owen?”
Her brother appeared on the video screen, thinner and older than his photograph.
“I’m safe,” he said.
“Nadia found me through the payment account.”
Clara sank against Victor.
Tears ran down her face as he held her upright.
“Why didn’t you call me?” she asked.
“I was ashamed.
I took Leon’s money, then learned what he planned.
I sent every bank record to the district attorney this morning.”
Leon lunged for Nadia’s phone.
Lena stepped into his path.
“No.”
He stopped inches from her.
“Move.”
“You chose me because you thought no one would listen to a maid.”
“No one will remember you when this is over.”
Margaret answered from her wheelchair.
“I will.”
Clara lifted her head.
“So will I.”
The hotel manager raised his tablet.
“And so will every employee whose wages you stole.”
Two federal investigators entered from the stairwell with the district attorney, Grace Holloway.
“Leon Mercer,” Grace said, “step away from Lena Hart.”
Leon held up the flash drive.
“I want immunity.”
“You are offering evidence we already received from Owen Whitmore.”
“I can give you Victor.”
Victor stepped forward.
“She already has me.”
Grace looked at him.
“Mr.
Romano has agreed to cooperate and surrender control of the companies under investigation.”
Leon’s hand tightened around the drive.
“Then I want protection.”
“You threatened a witness, forged medical orders, diverted charity funds, and attempted to destroy evidence,” Grace said.
“You are in no position to bargain.”
Ross slipped toward the exit.
Nadia turned her camera.
“Detective, where are you going?”
Grace nodded to the investigators.
“Detain Ross too.”
Leon looked from Clara to Victor, then fixed his eyes on Lena.
“This happened because you could not keep your head down.”
Lena met his stare.
“No.
It happened because I finally looked up.”
An investigator secured Leon’s wrists.
As they led him away, he twisted back toward Victor.
“You’ll regret choosing her truth over our history.”
Victor touched his split lip.
“I already regret every day I chose you.”
