The strap dropped to the floor.

Daniel didn't move.

He just stood there, eyes fixed on Vanessa, breathing hard.

Ethan's lip was trembling.

A red mark ran across his arm where the strap had landed.

Daniel looked at his son.

Then at the coffee table — where two tiny hands were still gripping the leg.

Sophie hadn't moved.

"How long?" Daniel's voice came out low.

Almost quiet.

That was worse than shouting.

Vanessa straightened up.

"Daniel, you don't understand what was happening here—"

"How.

Long."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it again.

Then Ethan spoke.

"Daddy…

she does this when you're away."

The room went completely still.

Daniel turned slowly toward Vanessa.

Something in his expression had shifted — not just anger.

Something colder.

"Every time?"

Vanessa took one step back.

"He's exaggerating.

You know how kids—"

"Sophie won't go near you." Daniel's voice cracked.

"My fifteen-month-old daughter hides from her own mother.

And I never saw it."

He crouched down beside the coffee table and held out his hand.

Sophie crawled straight to him without a sound.

That was when Vanessa said the one thing that changed everything.

"She was never supposed to be yours anyway."

---

What did Vanessa mean by that — and what secret had she been hiding since before Sophie was born?

The truth is darker than Daniel ever imagined.
