“He said, ‘If Jennifer finds out what happened tonight, everything is over.’”
I felt a chill move through me.
“What did you ask him?”
“I asked whether he was going to leave you.”
“And?”
“He said he already had a plan.”
My attorney stopped writing.
“What plan?”
Chloe looked at me.
“He called it an arrangement.”
I felt my heartbeat change.
“Those exact words?”
“Yes.”
“What arrangement?”
“I asked him.”
“What did he say?”
“He said, ‘For the arrangement, Jennifer gets Lily, you get your baby, and everyone walks away.’”
The room went silent.
I couldn't move.
My attorney slowly looked up.
“Did he say that?”
“Yes.”
I stared at Chloe.
“Jennifer gets Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You get your baby.”
“Yes.”
“And everyone walks away.”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
“Did he tell you that the babies would be switched?”
“No.”
“Did he say they were related?”
“No.”
“Then what did he mean?”
“I don't know.”
“What arrangement?”
“I don't know.”
I stood abruptly.
Chloe flinched.
I walked toward the window.
Cars moved along the street.
People crossed sidewalks.
Normal lives.
Normal mornings.
And somewhere inside the last few years of my marriage was a plan involving two babies.
But the babies had never been switched.
So why had Daniel said:
Jennifer gets Lily. You get your baby.
Unless he wasn't talking about a baby switch.
Unless he had been talking about something else entirely.
I turned around.
“Did Daniel ever tell you Lily was supposed to die?”
Chloe's face went white.
“No.”
“He told me he was protecting her.”
“He told me she wasn't supposed to be born.”
I stared at her.
“He said that?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The morning after the baptism.”
My stomach dropped.
“What exactly did he say?”
“He said, ‘Lily was never part of the original plan.’”
My blood ran cold.
“What original plan?”
“I don't know.”
“Chloe.”
“I don't!”
She started crying.
“I asked him what he meant. He wouldn't tell me.”
I sat down again.
“Then why stay with him?”
“I didn't.”
“What?”
“I left.”
“When?”
“After he came to my apartment.”
“After the baptism?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“He told me the DNA test would destroy everything.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“He didn't need to.”
She wiped her eyes.
“He told me if I spoke, my baby would disappear.”
My attorney's expression hardened.
“Did he say how?”
“He said there were people who could make a child disappear without anyone knowing.”
I felt my skin crawl.
“Did he name anyone?”
“No.”
“Did he mention the hospital?”
“Yes.”
“St. Mary's?”
“Yes.”
I looked at my attorney.
Then at Chloe.
“Did he ever mention Evelyn Carter?”
Chloe nodded slowly.
“He said that name once.”
“When?”
“The night he came to the hospital.”
“What did he say?”
“He asked me if I'd ever met her.”
“What did you say?”
“No.”
“What did he say?”
“He said, ‘Good. Keep it that way.’”
I closed my eyes.
There was no longer any doubt.
Evelyn Carter was connected to Daniel.
To Chloe.
To Lily.
To the missing hours.
And somehow, to a plan that existed before Lily was even born.
We left the café separately.
My attorney drove me home.
I spent the entire ride staring out the window.
The phrase kept repeating in my mind.
For the arrangement.
I had heard it before.
Not from Chloe.
From Daniel.
Months ago.
Before Lily was born.
I had been sitting at our kitchen table, sorting baby clothes.
Daniel had been on the phone in the hallway.
I hadn't heard the conversation clearly.
Only one sentence.
“That's not how the arrangement works.”
At the time, I thought he was talking about work.
Now I wasn't sure.
When I got home, I went straight to the attic.
I opened the old storage box where I kept my pregnancy documents.
Doctor's appointments.
Ultrasound photographs.
Hospital forms.
Insurance papers.
Everything.
I searched for the first hospital registration.
There.
The date.
The time.
The signature.
I held it beneath the light.
My name was printed correctly.
Jennifer Carter.
Pregnancy.
Single fetus.
Expected delivery date.
Nothing unusual.
Then I found an older document.
One I had forgotten.
It was a hospital financial authorization form.
Dated two months before Lily was born.
I read the signature.
Daniel.
But beneath his signature was another line.
Secondary authorized contact: Evelyn Carter.
My hands began shaking.
I called my attorney.
“Check something for me.”
“What?”
“Was there ever a person named Evelyn Carter listed as an authorized contact on my maternity records?”
Silence.
Then:
“No.”
“I have a form.”
“What form?”
“Financial authorization.”
“Send it.”
I took a photograph.
She received it seconds later.
Then she called back.
“Jennifer.”
“What?”
“This form wasn't in the hospital records we received.”
I stared at it.
“What?”
“It wasn't included.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Then find out.”
“I will.”
I looked at the signature.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Two names.
One document.
A secret arrangement.
And suddenly, another memory surfaced.
The night before my delivery, Daniel had sat beside me on the couch.
He had rubbed my stomach.
He had smiled.
He had said:
“Whatever happens, I'll make sure everything goes according to plan.”
At the time, I thought he was talking about the birth.
Now I knew better.
That night, Daniel called.
I answered.
“You spoke to Chloe.”
It wasn't a question.
“Yes.”
“You shouldn't have.”
“Why?”
“Because she doesn't know what she's talking about.”
“She knows about the arrangement.”
Silence.
I smiled bitterly.
“So you remember.”
“I don't know what she told you.”
“She told me you said, ‘Jennifer gets Lily, Chloe gets her baby, and everyone walks away.’”
His breathing changed.
“Jennifer—”
“What arrangement?”
“It's complicated.”
“Try me.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
“You.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I was trying to protect you from something you couldn't see.”
“Then why did you lie to me?”
“Because the truth would have destroyed you.”
“The truth is already destroying me.”
He said nothing.
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Who is Evelyn Carter?”
His silence was immediate.
Too immediate.
“Daniel?”
“Where did you hear that name?”
“Answer me.”
“Jennifer, don't.”
“Who is she?”
“I told you to stop.”
“Was she at St. Mary's?”
“Stop.”
“Did she sign Lily's record?”
“Stop!”
His voice exploded through the phone.
Then silence.
I heard him breathing.
I whispered:
“You're scared.”
“No.”
“You are.”
“Jennifer…”
“Was Evelyn involved in the arrangement?”
He didn't answer.
I closed my eyes.
“Was she?”
Finally, Daniel said:
“Yes.”
My heart stopped.
“Who is she?”
“I can't tell you.”
“You just admitted she was involved.”
“Because I had no choice.”
“Everyone says that.”
“You don't understand what was happening.”
“Then tell me.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because she's dead.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
“She died.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“Then how did she sign Lily's record?”
He didn't answer.
My heart began pounding.
“Daniel.”
Nothing.
“Evelyn Carter signed the record at St. Mary's.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“I saw her.”
I froze.
“When?”
“That night.”
“Daniel…”
“I saw her before Lily was born.”
My voice dropped to a whisper.
“Then she wasn't dead.”
“No.”
“Who was she?”
He didn't answer.
“Daniel.”
“I can't.”
“Who was Evelyn Carter?”
He finally spoke.
And the words changed everything.
“She was Lily's mother.”
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
The phone slipped from my hand.
For several seconds, I simply stared at it.
Then it rang again.
Daniel.
I didn't answer.
A message appeared.
Jennifer, please. Don't look for Evelyn.
Another message followed.
Because if you find out who she really was, you'll understand why I lied to Chloe.
I stared at the words.
Then one final message appeared.
And you'll understand why Lily was never supposed to be yours.
