“Why?”
“Because the child's mother had disappeared.”
“Who was the mother?”
She whispered:
“We never knew.”
I stared at her.
“Then why did Daniel say Evelyn was Lily's mother?”
She looked up sharply.
“He said that?”
“Yes.”
“That isn't true.”
The answer came too quickly.
I froze.
“What?”
“Evelyn wasn't Lily's mother.”
“Then who was?”
“I don't know.”
“Does Daniel?”
Her silence was answer enough.
My attorney asked Daniel's father about the night of Lily's birth.
He refused at first.
Then I placed the hospital records in front of him.
“You knew about the arrangement.”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
“You knew Daniel changed the records.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Evelyn.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the child from seven years ago.”
“Yes.”
“Then tell me what happened the night Lily was born.”
He closed his eyes.
“I wasn't there.”
“Your wife was.”
“She didn't see everything.”
“Neither did Daniel.”
He looked at me.
“What are you asking?”
“Why was your son terrified?”
He said nothing.
“Why did he tell Chloe her baby might be taken?”
Nothing.
“Why did he tell me Lily was never supposed to be mine?”
His face tightened.
Finally, he said:
“Because Daniel believed someone would come for her.”
“Who?”
“We never knew.”
“Then why did he think Lily was in danger?”
“Because of the bloodline.”
I stared at him.
“What bloodline?”
He looked toward his wife.
She shook her head.
He sighed.
“Daniel's family has a secret.”
My attorney's expression sharpened.
“What secret?”
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Evelyn wasn't the only person connected to that child.”
“Who else?”
“Daniel's older brother.”
I froze.
“Daniel has a brother?”
His mother closed her eyes.
“Had.”
The word hung in the room.
“Where is he?”
“He died.”
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
My heart began pounding.
“How?”
“Car accident.”
“Before or after the baby?”
“After.”
“Did he have a child?”
Silence.
I looked at them.
“Did he?”
His father finally said:
“Yes.”
I stopped breathing.
“Who?”
“We don't know where she is.”
She.
A girl.
Not the boy in the photograph.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another missing person.
I looked at my attorney.
She was already writing.
“How many children were involved?”
His mother whispered:
“Two.”
My blood went cold.
“The boy from seven years ago.”
“Yes.”
“And your dead son's daughter.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to her?”
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“After his death.”
“Who took her?”
“We don't know.”
“Was Daniel involved?”
His mother didn't answer.
I turned to his father.
“Was he?”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
I felt the room tilt.
“What did he do?”
“He helped hide her.”
“Why?”
“To keep her alive.”
“From whom?”
“We don't know.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying they don't know.”
His father looked at me.
“Because that is the truth.”
I stared at him.
Then I noticed something.
The envelope.
There was one final document inside.
A handwritten note.
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was Daniel's.
I recognized it immediately.
It said:
If Jennifer ever finds this, tell her Lily was never the target.
I read it again.
Then underneath:
The target was the person who would eventually become Lily's mother.
My hands began to shake.
I looked at Daniel's mother.
“Who wrote this?”
She whispered:
“Daniel.”
“When?”
“Before your wedding.”
I stared at the page.
Before our wedding.
Before Lily.
Before Chloe.
Before the baptism.
Daniel had known something about me.
Something I had never known about myself.
I turned the paper over.
There was one final sentence.
If she becomes pregnant, everything starts again.
I couldn't breathe.
My attorney took the note.
“Jennifer…”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at Daniel's parents.
“What did Daniel know about me?”
His mother started crying.
“I don't know.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I swear.”
“Then why did he write this?”
She looked at the note.
“I think…”
“What?”
“I think Daniel believed you were connected to the child from seven years ago.”
My heart pounded.
“Which child?”
“The boy.”
I shook my head.
“How?”
“We never found out.”
I looked down at the photograph again.
The newborn boy.
Dark hair.
Pale blanket.
Tiny face.
I stared at him.
Then something about the picture bothered me.
The blanket.
The hospital.
The angle.
I had seen it before.
Not in the files.
Not in Chloe's messages.
Somewhere else.
I opened my phone.
I searched through old photographs.
Pregnancy.
Ultrasounds.
Hospital.
Baptism.
Then I found one.
A photograph my mother had taken the morning after Lily was born.
Lily was asleep in my arms.
The same pale pink blanket.
The same angle.
The same tiny mark beneath the left ear.
I stared at the two photographs side by side.
My heart began pounding.
But there was one difference.
The old photograph of the seven-year-old baby had a hospital bracelet.
I zoomed in.
The number was barely visible.
5821.
My blood turned to ice.
Lily's original bracelet number.
The same number that had supposedly been issued the night she was born.
Seven years before she existed.
Impossible.
Unless the photograph wasn't seven years old.
I looked at Daniel's mother.
“Where did you get this photograph?”
She stared at it.
“I don't know.”
“Look at the date.”
She did.
Her face went white.
“That's impossible.”
“What?”
She pointed to the bottom corner.
A timestamp.
Not seven years ago.
Not the date of the guardianship agreement.
It was dated the night Lily was born.
I couldn't breathe.
The photograph of the baby boy—
the child everyone said existed seven years ago—
had been taken at St. Mary's on the same night Lily was born.
My attorney stood.
“Jennifer.”
I couldn't answer.
The room seemed to shrink around me.
The secret hadn't started seven years ago.
Someone had made us believe it had.
Someone had taken an old story, attached it to a new baby, and built an entire lie around it.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
Now you understand why Daniel was afraid.
Another appeared.
The child they hid was never a boy.
My heart stopped.
Then the final message arrived.
They hid Lily.
