“I don't know who was after her.”
“Then what does she have to do with Lily?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why did you tell me Lily was never supposed to be mine?”
He froze.
I watched his face.
He realized his mistake.
I said nothing.
Neither did he.
Then I whispered:
“Who was supposed to have Lily?”
He closed his eyes.
“No one.”
“That isn't what you said.”
“I was angry.”
“You told Chloe Lily was never supposed to be born.”
“I didn't mean it.”
“You told me she was never supposed to be mine.”
“I meant—”
“You meant what?”
He looked at me.
“The plan was different.”
“What plan?”
He didn't answer.
I waited.
Finally, he said:
“Jennifer, I never switched the babies.”
“I know.”
“I never took Lily away from you.”
“I know.”
“I never gave Chloe your child.”
“I know.”
“Then believe me.”
“I will when you tell me the rest.”
He looked exhausted.
“Lily was always yours.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Then why did you say she wasn't?”
“Because I was trying to make you leave.”
“Why?”
“Because staying with me put you in danger.”
I stared at him.
“You could have told me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if you knew, you would ask questions.”
“I asked questions anyway.”
“And now you're in danger.”
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“From whom?”
He whispered:
“People who don't want the old records found.”
“What old records?”
“The original transfer.”
“From seven years ago?”
“Yes.”
I felt my heartbeat accelerate.
“The baby?”
“Yes.”
“The boy?”
Daniel shook his head.
“There was never a boy.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
“The photograph was manipulated.”
My stomach dropped.
“Then why did your mother have it?”
“Because someone gave it to her.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Daniel.”
“I don't.”
I watched him carefully.
“You're saying the child in the photograph was Lily?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“I don't know.”
“Then what was the point of the photograph?”
“To make you believe there had been a child transfer.”
“Why?”
“To keep you away from the real file.”
I stared at him.
The pieces were shifting again.
Someone had created a false trail.
The seven-year-old baby.
The boy.
Evelyn.
The transfer.
All of it might have been designed to hide something else.
I whispered:
“Where is the real file?”
Daniel looked at me.
“I don't know.”
I smiled faintly.
“That's another lie.”
He stood abruptly.
“I have to go.”
“No.”
“Jennifer.”
“You're not leaving.”
He turned toward the door.
I stepped between him and it.
“Tell me about the money.”
His face hardened.
“What?”
“The $15,000.”
“What about it?”
“Why did you send it to Chloe?”
“Because she needed help.”
“That's not the whole reason.”
He looked at me.
“It was medical.”
“You lied.”
“No.”
“You told me we couldn't afford a night nurse.”
“I was wrong.”
“You told me Lily's hospital expenses were too high.”
“I was trying to save money.”
“You emptied our savings.”
“I needed to help Chloe.”
“Why?”
“Because she was carrying my child.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He stared at me.
“You weren't helping Chloe.”
“Then what was I doing?”
“You were paying her to stay quiet.”
His face went still.
I had him.
For one second.
One tiny second.
His eyes told me everything.
Then he said:
“Who told you that?”
I smiled.
“No one.”
I stepped closer.
“You just confirmed it.”
He looked at me.
“You recorded me.”
I didn't answer.
He reached for my wrist.
I pulled away.
“Don't touch me.”
He backed up.
“Jennifer.”
“Tell me what you were paying her to hide.”
“I wasn't.”
“You were.”
“I swear.”
“What did she know?”
“Nothing.”
“What did she know about the hospital?”
His eyes moved toward the floor.
“Nothing.”
“What did she know about Evelyn?”
Silence.
“What did she know about the arrangement?”
He closed his eyes.
“Enough.”
My heart pounded.
“What did she know?”
“That I lied to her.”
“About what?”
He looked at me.
“About Lily.”
I stared at him.
“What lie?”
“I told Chloe that Lily wasn't your biological daughter.”
My breath caught.
“But the DNA says she is.”
“I know.”
“Why tell her that?”
“Because I needed her to believe the arrangement.”
“What arrangement?”
He looked exhausted.
“The arrangement was never about switching babies.”
“I know.”
“It was about making Chloe believe her child was the only one that mattered.”
“Why?”
“Because if she knew Lily was also mine, she would ask questions.”
“What questions?”
“About the night at the hospital.”
I leaned closer.
“What happened that night?”
He looked at me.
“I never switched the babies.”
“I know.”
“I never harmed Lily.”
“I know.”
“I never wanted you to lose her.”
“Then what did you do?”
He swallowed.
“I changed the record.”
“Which record?”
“The original birth certificate.”
“Why?”
“Because the original record named someone else.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
He didn't answer.
“Daniel.”
He whispered:
“Evelyn Carter.”
I stared at him.
“Why would Evelyn be on Lily's birth record?”
“Because she was listed as the mother.”
I felt the room spin.
“But you said she wasn't Lily's mother.”
“She wasn't.”
“Then why was she listed?”
“Because someone wanted her name there.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Daniel.”
He looked at me.
“I swear.”
I could barely breathe.
Then he said something that made my blood freeze.
“The original birth certificate didn't list you as Lily's mother.”
Silence.
I couldn't move.
“What?”
“It was changed.”
“By whom?”
“I don't know.”
“Then how did I become her mother?”
“You always were.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“I know.”
“Who changed it?”
He looked at me.
“I did.”
My heart stopped.
“You changed Lily's birth certificate?”
“Yes.”
“From what?”
“From Evelyn Carter.”
“Why?”
“Because the hospital record had been compromised.”
“By whom?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why Evelyn?”
“Because her identity was being used as a shield.”
I stared at him.
A shield.
A false mother.
A false record.
A false story.
I suddenly understood why someone had wanted me to find the old photograph.
They wanted me to believe Lily belonged to a seven-year-old mystery.
But Daniel had changed her identity himself.
I whispered:
“You made me her mother on paper.”
“Yes.”
“Even though I was already her biological mother.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because someone had already decided you couldn't be.”
I froze.
“Who decided?”
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who?”
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“The person who signed the original record.”
My heart stopped.
“Evelyn?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Daniel's voice broke.
“Your mother.”
I couldn't breathe.
“My mother?”
He nodded.
“She signed it before you ever knew what was happening.”
The room disappeared.
My mother.
My own mother.
The woman who had held Lily after the baptism.
The woman who had been there the night I gave birth.
The woman who had spent months telling me Daniel was a good father.
My mother had signed something.
But why?
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Jennifer, listen.”
I couldn't.
“Your mother knew about the arrangement.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“She knew.”
“No.”
“She was the reason I married you.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
He closed his eyes.
“I was supposed to protect you.”
My voice was barely audible.
“From whom?”
He looked at me.
“From your own family.”
The recorder beneath my sleeve suddenly felt like a weight against my skin.
I had wanted a confession.
I had gotten one.
But I hadn't expected this.
Daniel walked toward the door.
I didn't stop him.
He opened it.
Then turned back.
“I never switched the babies.”
I looked at him.
“Then what did you do?”
He hesitated.
“I changed one name.”
“Whose?”
He whispered:
“Yours.”
Then he walked out.
I stood alone in the living room.
My hands were shaking.
I reached beneath my sleeve and pulled out the recorder.
The entire conversation was still there.
Daniel had admitted the money.
The lies.
The hospital records.
The arrangement.
The false birth certificate.
And my mother's involvement.
But one question remained.
Why would my mother help Daniel hide my own daughter from me?
My phone rang.
My mother.
I stared at her name.
Then I answered.
Her voice was trembling.
“Jennifer.”
“What did you do?”
Silence.
“Mom?”
She began to cry.
“I tried to protect you.”
My blood went cold.
“From what?”
She whispered:
“Your father.”
I stopped breathing.
My father had died eleven years earlier.
“What about him?”
My mother's voice dropped to almost nothing.
“He isn't dead.”
