Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because everyone was afraid of what the truth would sound like.
Claire stood in the middle of the ballroom holding the medical report with both hands.
Her eyes moved over the page again and again.
Like she was hoping the words would rearrange themselves.
Like she was waiting for the nightmare to become something else.
Daniel noticed.
“Claire.””
She looked up.
Her face was completely empty.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Just shock.
“Who?”” Daniel asked.
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Laura, the attorney, stepped forward.
“I should explain.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“This report was discovered during a review of the medical records connected to the pregnancy claim.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Just tell me.””
Laura nodded.
“The pregnancy was real.””
A wave of emotion moved through the room.
Claire closed her eyes.
“But the paternity information was wrong.””
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Laura looked at the document.
“It means the child Claire lost was not Michael’s.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“That’s impossible.””
Everyone looked at him.
Laura noticed.
“You seem very certain.””
Victor immediately recovered.
“I mean… Michael was involved.””
Claire looked at him.
“You knew?””
Victor didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped toward him.
“You knew something was wrong.””
Victor remained silent.
That silence said everything.
Claire looked down at the report again.
Then she whispered:
“Who?””
Laura handed the paper back to her.
“According to the test results…”
She paused.
“The biological father was Daniel.””
Nobody moved.
The words didn’t make sense at first.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Laura repeated it.
“The baby was yours.””
Claire dropped the paper.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Claire looked at him.
“I thought…”
She stopped.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You thought what?””
Claire started crying.
“I thought Michael was right.””
Daniel frowned.
“About what?””
“That you couldn’t have children.””
The room went silent.
My mother covered her mouth.
My father looked away.
Daniel looked completely lost.
“I never had a test.””
Claire shook her head.
“What?””
“I never took a fertility test.””
The realization hit everyone.
Michael had lied.
The entire foundation of this disaster had been built on a lie.
Claire backed away.
“He told me.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“He told you something that wasn’t true.””
She nodded slowly.
“He said he checked your records.””
Daniel looked toward Victor.
“And you knew.””
Victor didn’t respond.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You knew I wasn’t infertile.””
Victor finally spoke.
“You were never supposed to find out.””
The sentence destroyed whatever remained of his innocence.
My father stared at him.
“You built everything around a lie.””
Victor shrugged.
“I built a plan.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“A plan that destroyed people.””
Victor looked at Claire.
“She was already broken.””
Claire flinched.
But this time, she didn’t look away.
“You made me believe my marriage was built on a mistake.””
Victor said nothing.
“You made me believe I had to hide my grief.””
Her voice grew stronger.
“You took the worst moment of my life and used it.””
For the first time that night, Victor looked uncomfortable.
Not guilty.
Uncomfortable.
Because Claire was no longer the frightened woman he had controlled.
She was someone who had finally seen the truth.
Daniel picked up the report.
“So the baby…”
He stopped.
The pain returned.
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
A tear fell down her face.
“Our baby was real.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, nobody knew what to say.
The child they had mourned had never been a lie.
The only lie was everything surrounding it.
Then my father’s phone rang.
Everyone looked.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed.
“What do you mean?””
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?”” Daniel asked.
My father looked at Victor.
“The board meeting has been suspended.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“Why?””
My father smiled sadly.
“Because they received the evidence.””
Daniel looked at Laura.
She nodded.
“The transfer cannot proceed.””
Victor took a step back.
For the first time all night…
he looked defeated.
But then his phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
And his face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He just stared at the message.
Then he looked at Claire.
Because whoever had sent it…
was someone Victor feared more than anyone in that room.
