Daniel stared at the phone.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The name glowing on the screen was someone none of us expected.

Dr. Michael Reeves.

Claire’s obstetrician.

Or at least, that was what we thought.

Daniel answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel? Thank God you picked up.””

Daniel stepped away.

“Who is this?””

The voice became quieter.

“Someone who made a terrible mistake.””

Claire closed her eyes.

I watched her face carefully.

She knew exactly who was on the phone.

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.””

Claire said nothing.

“Claire,” Daniel demanded, “you know this man.””

She finally whispered:

“Yes.””

My brother’s jaw tightened.

“Who is he?””

Before she could answer, the voice on the phone spoke again.

“Daniel, I need you to listen carefully. Claire didn’t do this alone.””

The room went silent.

Claire immediately stood.

“Michael, don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Not because she interrupted him.

Because she sounded afraid.

The doctor continued.

“She asked me for help.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What kind of help?””

No answer.

The doctor sighed.

“I helped her create fake medical records.””

My mother gasped.

My father grabbed the edge of the desk.

“You helped her fake a pregnancy?””

“No,” the doctor said quickly.

“Not exactly.””

Daniel laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“What does that even mean?””

The doctor paused.

“Because there was a pregnancy.””

Everyone froze.

Claire looked down.

I felt my heart stop.

A pregnancy?

Then what was the lie?

Daniel’s voice shook.

“Explain.””

The doctor spoke slowly.

“Claire was pregnant six months ago.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Six months?””

Claire began crying again.

But this time, nobody rushed to comfort her.

“She lost the baby,” the doctor continued.

The room became painfully quiet.

“She was devastated. She couldn’t tell you.””

Daniel stared at Claire.

“Why?””

Claire finally spoke.

“Because I knew what you would do.””

“What would I do?””

“You would look at me differently.””

Daniel looked confused.

“I would have loved you.””

Claire shook her head.

“You say that now.””

The doctor interrupted.

“Claire became obsessed with the idea that if she admitted the miscarriage, she would lose everything. She thought you would leave her.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“So she decided to pretend?””

Claire nodded.

A painful silence followed.

She wasn’t just caught in a lie.

She had built an entire world around one.

The fake belly.

The fake appointments.

The fake excitement.

The fake future.

But there was still something missing.

I looked at Sophie.

The little girl had been quiet for several minutes.

“Sophie,” I asked gently, “when you saw Claire in the bathroom, was that the first time?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

“What do you mean?”” Daniel asked.

Sophie looked at Claire.

“She cried.””

Claire’s face changed.

“When?””

“In Grandpa’s office.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

Sophie continued.

“She came here before the party. She was crying with another person.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?””

Sophie pointed toward the phone.

“The doctor.””

The room went cold.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You met him here today?””

Claire didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My brother took the phone back.

“Michael. Why were you in my father’s office with my wife?””

The doctor went silent.

Too long.

Then he said:

“Because Claire wanted to tell you the truth tonight.””

Claire looked up.

“What?””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You were going to tell me?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Before Claire could respond, the doctor spoke again.

“Because someone else found out first.””

Everyone looked confused.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Who?””

The doctor hesitated.

Then came the words that changed everything.

“Daniel… your wife wasn’t the one who asked me to fake the pregnancy.””

Claire’s eyes widened.

“What are you saying?””

The doctor continued.

“She was pressured into it.””

Nobody understood.

Not even Claire.

“By who?”” Daniel asked.

The doctor took a breath.

“By someone in your family.””

And then the phone went dead.
