I had worn sensible shoes because I hated dancing in heels.

That ridiculous choice may have been the reason I reached the private elevator before the doors closed.

Thomas and Elaine were behind me when I burst from the service corridor into the west lobby.

Chloe stood inside the elevator.

Maxwell had one hand around her upper arm.

Cecelia stood beside them.

The uniformed officer from the ballroom was positioned outside the doors.

The same officer the anonymous message had warned me about.

"Chloe!"

My daughter looked up.

The fear in her face disappeared instantly beneath a practiced smile.

"Mom."

Maxwell pressed the button.

The doors started closing.

I shoved my bouquet between them.

The doors bounced open.

The officer stepped forward.

"Ma'am, you need to return to the reception."

Thomas moved beside me.

"On whose authority?"

The officer looked at him.

"Private event."

"We're invited guests."

"This area is restricted."

Thomas showed his attorney identification.

"I'm Thomas Hale."

The officer didn't even glance at it.

That told Thomas more than any answer could have.

He lowered his voice.

"Are you working for the Fairmont Crest, Sterling Development, or a law-enforcement agency right now?"

The officer hesitated.

Maxwell snapped, "We're leaving."

Chloe didn't move.

I looked directly at her.

"Sweetheart, your Aunt Elaine needs help with something."

It was a stupid sentence.

But Chloe understood.

She pulled once against Maxwell's grip.

"I'll be back in a minute."

"No," he said.

Not loudly.

That was worse.

Cecelia touched Chloe's shoulder.

"You've had enough excitement."

Elaine stepped forward.

"I'm an ER nurse. Chloe looks pale."

"She's tired," Cecelia said.

"I'd like to hear Chloe say that."

Maxwell's fingers tightened.

Chloe winced.

Elaine saw it.

So did Thomas.

Thomas took out his phone.

"Let go of her."

Maxwell looked at him.

"Excuse me?"

"You are visibly gripping her arm hard enough to cause pain. Release her."

The officer shifted position.

My brother noticed.

"Officer," Thomas said, "if you interfere with an adult woman attempting to leave voluntarily, I strongly recommend you understand exactly who is paying you and what authority you believe you have."

The officer's eyes changed.

Fear.

Not much.

But enough.

Maxwell released Chloe.

She immediately moved toward me.

Cecelia caught her wrist.

"Chloe."

My daughter froze.

That single reaction told me more about the last two years than any confession could have.

"Come here," I said.

Cecelia smiled.

"Margaret, don't embarrass her."

I reached for Chloe.

Cecelia let go.

My daughter crossed the three feet between us and collapsed against me.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

Her forehead hit my shoulder.

Her body began trembling.

I wrapped both arms around her.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

That nearly broke me.

"For what?"

"I ruined everything."

"You didn't ruin anything."

Behind her, Maxwell spoke.

"Chloe."

She stiffened.

I felt it through the wedding gown.

He didn't need to touch her.

His voice was enough.

"Come back."

She shook her head.

"Chloe."

"No."

It was almost inaudible.

Maxwell stepped out of the elevator.

Thomas moved between them.

"Don't."

Maxwell's face darkened.

"She's my wife."

"She is also an adult with the right to walk away from you."

"You're turning a private marital disagreement into a circus."

"No," I said. "You did that when you chased me into a restroom demanding a note."

Chloe jerked back.

"You found it?"

"Yes."

Her knees seemed to weaken.

Elaine caught her.

"Let's go somewhere private."

The officer stepped toward the elevator controls.

Thomas raised his phone.

"I'm recording."

The officer stopped.

Cecelia's composure cracked.

"This is absurd. Maxwell, take your wife upstairs."

Chloe whispered, "No."

Cecelia turned to her.

"What did you say?"

My daughter's face was wet with tears now, but she looked directly at her mother-in-law.

"I said no."

Maxwell's jaw tightened.

"She's confused."

"I'm not confused."

"You're exhausted."

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

"Because your mother is here."

Chloe stared at him.

Then she said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

"No. Because my mother is here, I finally have enough courage to say it."

The elevator lobby went silent.

Maxwell looked toward the officer.

Thomas noticed.

"Don't even think about it."

The officer raised both hands slightly.

"I'm not involved in a family dispute."

"Then leave," Thomas said.

He didn't.

Of course he didn't.

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

Service suite 1408. Key at concierge under Hale. Evidence inside.

Thomas read over my shoulder.

"This could be a trap."

"I know."

Chloe saw the message.

Her face changed.

"Who is that?"

"We don't know."

She stared at the number.

Then whispered, "I think I do."

Every eye went to her.

"Who?"

Chloe swallowed.

"Her name is Olivia Grant."

Maxwell's face went white.

It happened so quickly that I almost missed it.

But Thomas didn't.

"Who is Olivia?" he asked.

Maxwell said immediately, "No one."

Chloe laughed once.

A broken sound.

"That's what you told me."

Maxwell stepped toward her.

"Chloe, enough."

Thomas blocked him.

"Stay where you are."

Chloe held my hand.

"Olivia worked for Maxwell."

"Assistant?" I asked.

"Not exactly."

She looked at him.

"She managed private events and travel for the family. About a year before I met Maxwell."

Cecelia interrupted.

"She was fired for theft."

Chloe's eyes hardened.

"That's what you said."

"It was true."

"Then why did you make me delete her message?"

Cecelia went still.

My daughter looked at me.

"Six months ago, Olivia contacted me. She said she needed to talk to me about Maxwell. He found the message before I could answer."

"What happened?" I asked.

Chloe touched the inside of her wrist unconsciously.

"He told me she was unstable. Then he changed my phone password because he said I'd been careless with security."

The missing phone.

The controlled calls.

The European honeymoon.

Everything aligned.

Thomas asked, "Did he ever threaten you?"

Chloe glanced at the officer.

"Not here."

Elaine spoke gently.

"Then we move somewhere safe."

I looked at Thomas.

"Suite 1408?"

He shook his head.

"Not alone. First we get her out of this hallway."

He called Judge Ramirez.

This time he put her on speaker only after asking Chloe's permission.

"Chloe," he said, "this is Judge Maria Ramirez. She isn't acting as your attorney. She needs to ask you a few questions so we can decide what immediate legal protection may be available."

Chloe nodded.

Her voice was barely steady.

"Okay."

Thomas told the judge where we were.

Ramirez's voice came through clear and firm.

"Chloe, are you trying to leave the hotel voluntarily?"

"Yes."

"Is anyone preventing you?"

Chloe looked at Maxwell.

"He's tried."

"Has your husband physically hurt you?"

A long silence.

Maxwell said, "Do not answer that."

Thomas turned on him.

"You speak again and I will have you removed."

Maxwell almost laughed.

"By whom?"

That question revealed how safe he felt.

The Sterlings had spent years building a world in which consequences arrived only for other people.

Judge Ramirez repeated calmly, "Chloe?"

My daughter inhaled.

"Yes."

Something inside me broke.

Not because I hadn't suspected it.

Because hearing her say it made every bruise real.

"When?"

"This morning. And before."

"Are you currently afraid of him?"

Chloe looked at Maxwell.

His eyes were fixed on her.

"Yes."

Cecelia gasped.
