The name Victor Sterling sent a cold ripple through the room.

Victor Sterling was the legendary black sheep of the Sterling-Vance bloodline. Decades ago, he had moved to Zurich, severed ties with the American branch, and built an empire in international private equity and private shipping. He was known in European banking circles as "The Shadow Patriarch"—a man who destroyed rivals by starving their supply chains from behind offshore shell companies.

That evening, inside our private penthouse in Mayfair, Julian and I reviewed the intelligence dossier Sarah had compiled.

"Victor doesn't care about logistics, Madeline," Julian said, tracking the money trails on his tablet. "He views your rise as an insult to the Sterling name. His nephew Ethan and brother Marcus lost everything to you. In Victor’s mind, you humiliated his family line."

"His family line humiliated themselves," I replied coldly, swirling my glass of red wine. "Ethan tried to ruin me, Marcus tried to steal my assets, and I beat them cleanly in open court and open markets. If Victor wants to spend his pension fighting me in the Mediterranean, he’s going to lose every cent he brought from Zurich."

"He’s not like Ethan, Madeline," Julian warned gently, reaching across the table to wrap his hand over mine. "Victor doesn't throw temper tantrums in boardrooms. He uses regulatory boards, cartel lawsuits, and political leverage. He’s already petitioning the European Maritime Commission to launch an antitrust investigation against Vance Logistics."

I looked at my husband, feeling the fire that had carried me through my darkest nights ignite once more in my chest.

"Then we won't fight him in the regulatory courts, Julian," I said, a slow, cold smile spreading across my lips. "We’ll fight him where it hurts most: his private investors."
