At 2:00 PM that same afternoon, I arrived at the grand iron security gates of my primary residence—a $3.5 million modern estate in the prestigious SouthPark neighborhood of Charlotte.

As my Range Rover approached the gate, I saw Bradley’s beat-up 2018 Ford Focus—a car he had kept in storage—parked sideways across the driveway.

Bradley was pacing back and forth on the manicured lawn, his clothes rumpled, his hair unwashed, and a desperate, wild look in his eyes. Beside him stood his mother, Barbara, sitting on a lawn chair she had pulled from the back of his trunk, holding a giant tumbler of iced coffee.

As soon as my car stopped at the gate, Bradley rushed over, slamming his hands against my driver’s side window.

"Maddie! Open the door!" he screamed, his voice muffled by the thick glass. "Maddie, please! Talk to me! The locks on the house are changed! My security code isn't working! The bank froze my debit card! What the hell is going on?!"

I slowly rolled the window down two inches—just enough for my voice to carry.

"Bradley," I said calmly. "You are trespassing on private property."

"Private property?!" Bradley yelled, grabbing the top of the glass. "This is our house, Maddie! We’re married! You can't lock me out of my own home!"

"This house was purchased six months before our wedding using funds from my father’s trust," I stated flatly. "Your name is not on the deed. Your name is not on the mortgage. And as of twelve o'clock today, a judge signed an emergency Temporary Restraining Order prohibiting you from coming within five hundred feet of me or this residence."

"A restraining order?!" Barbara shrieked, scrambling out of her lawn chair and rushing to the car. "You cold-hearted, vindictive bitch! You locked my son out of his home over a joke?! He’s your husband!"

"He was my husband," I corrected her, turning my head to look at Barbara. "And by the way, Barbara... the moving truck I hired is currently pulling up to your house in the suburbs."

Barbara froze, her mouth agape. "What... what are you talking about?"

"The house you live in is registered under Vance Logistics Real Estate Holdings," I explained smoothly. "Since Bradley engaged in felony asNextlt and financial breach, I have canceled the lease agreement. You have forty-eight hours to pack your clothes and vacate the property before the Sheriff’s department locks the doors."

"No!" Barbara screamed, her face turning crimson. "You can't do that! That's my home!"

"It was never your home, Barbara," I said coldly. "It was my charity. And the charity is officially closed."

At that exact moment, two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police cruisers pulled up behind Bradley’s car, their blue lights flashing brightly against the tree-lined street.

Two officers stepped out of the vehicles, holding copies of the restraining order.

"Bradley Vance?" the lead officer called out. "Step away from the vehicle!"

"Officers, wait!" Bradley panicked, holding his hands up in the air. "She’s my wife! This is a domestic misunderstanding! She’s trying to steal my money and my house!"

"Mr. Vance, you have been served with an Emergency Restraining Order and a Notice of Eviction," the officer stated firmly, grabbing Bradley’s arm and pulling him back from my window. "If you do not step off this property immediately, you will be arrested for violating a court order."

Bradley looked at the officers, then looked at me behind the tinted glass of my Range Rover. The realization was finally sinking into his thick, arrogant skull: I was not coming back. There would be no negotiations. There would be no tearful reconciliations. I was cutting him out of my life like a cancerous tumor.

"Maddie!" Bradley cried out as the officer forced him back toward his car. "Please! I have no money! My card is declined! Where am I supposed to go?!"

I didn't answer him. I pressed the button on my dashboard. The grand iron security gates swung open smoothly.

I rolled my window up, drove onto my property, and watched in my rearview mirror as the gates closed slowly behind me, locking Bradley and his hysterical mother out in the cold world they so richly deserved.
