“You shouldn't have come out here alone,” Marcus scolded, pulling me into the shadows between two massive shipping containers.

“I had to,” I fired back, my adrenaline surging.

“Vance thinks you're a figment of my imagination, and my mother just faked a helicopter crash to throw them off her scent.”

Marcus nodded grimly, checking the perimeter with practiced efficiency.

“I know,” he said softly.

“I intercepted the police scanners.”

“Eleanor’s reach within the department is deeper than we thought, Clara.”

“When I brought you to the station, two uniformed officers intercepted me at the entrance.”

“They weren't trying to help; they were trying to detain me.”

I gasped, the terrifying reality of our situation settling over me.

“She planned for me to go to the police,” I realized.

“She wanted me isolated in that interrogation room while she vanished with Lily.”

“Exactly,” Marcus confirmed, leading me deeper into the labyrinth of the shipping yard.

We arrived at an old, rusted container tucked away in a neglected corner of the pier.

Marcus unlocked a heavy padlock, sliding the metal door open to reveal a makeshift safe house.

It was sparse, equipped only with a folding table, a cot, and an impressive array of tactical gear and computer monitors.

“Welcome to the resistance,” he muttered, booting up the main computer terminal.

“Where is she taking Lily?” I demanded, pacing the narrow confines of the container.

“The Vanguard Trust unlocks tomorrow at noon,” Marcus said, his fingers flying across the keyboard.

“But there's a catch.”

He brought up a complex legal document on the screen, highlighting a specific clause in bright yellow.

“The biometric signature,” I breathed, reading the text over his shoulder.

“The trust cannot be fully transferred to a new guardian without a physical, biometric confirmation from the living parent.”

“She needs your fingerprint and retinal scan,” Marcus explained, turning to face me.

“She didn't push you off that balcony to kill you.”

“She pushed you to incapacitate you, to put you in a coma or a hospital bed where she could control you.”

“When I caught you, it ruined her timeline.”

I felt a cold sweat break out across my forehead.

“So she took Lily to force me to come to her,” I concluded.

“She knows I'll willingly hand over the trust to save my daughter.”

“Yes,” Marcus said, pulling a sleek black handgun from a duffel bag on the table.

“And we are going to use that exactly to our advantage.”
