Ethan broke down.
The hardened, defiant shell he had worn since the birthday party cracked completely. He covered his face with his shaking hands, a deep, wracking sob tearing from his chest as all the toxic bravado, the anger, and the misplaced resentment evaporated into the morning air.
“I... I didn't want to be like this,” Ethan choked out between heavy sobs, his knees buckling slightly as he leaned against the wall for support. “She... she told me that feeling angry meant I was strong... she said if I showed weakness, you wouldn't love me anymore...”
Hearing those words broke my heart into a thousand pieces, but it also crystallized my mission. The enemy wasn't just my son; the enemy was the generational poison that Victoria had injected into his mind.
I pulled Ethan into my arms, holding him tightly against my chest, ignoring his initial stiff resistance until he finally collapsed into my embrace, weeping like the fifteen-year-old boy he still was.
Victoria stepped forward, panic finally piercing through her arrogant facade. “Ethan, don't listen to her! She’s brainwashing you! Get away from her—”
“Shut up, Victoria,” I said without turning around, my voice carrying a terrifying authority that silenced her instantly.
I looked up at my mother-in-law, my eyes locking onto hers with unyielding resolve.
“This is the last time you will ever speak to my son,” I said clearly, every word landing like a hammer blow. “The legal documents are already prepared. Restraining orders, comprehensive communication blocks, and total asset isolation from any trusts you hoped to leave him conditionally. If you ever come within five hundred yards of my children again, I won't just ruin your reputation—I will ensure you spend your remaining years answering to federal investigators for your financial interference and corruption.”
Victoria opened her mouth to retort, but no words came out. She sank back into her armchair, utterly defeated, realizing that her wealth, her influence, and her manipulation had finally hit an unbreakable wall.
