Word had leaked through the criminal underworld that Dante Moretti was "soft"—that the cold, ruthless boss had compromised his operational security by sheltering the widow and child of the man who had stolen from them. Sensing weakness, a coalition of rogue captains loyal to Salvatore planned a coordinated hostile takeover at the primary shipping warehouses down by the Calumet River.

It was midnight when the alert came through the secure comms console in Dante’s home office.

Clara was sitting at her desk, reviewing export manifests, when Dante walked in dressed in a heavy black tactical coat over his suit, his holster fully loaded, a grim, determined expression carved across his face.

“Lock the biometric panic room on the third floor,” Dante instructed without preamble, tossing a set of encrypted master keys onto her desk. “Don't open the door for anyone except me or Marcus’s old deputy, Vance.”

Clara stood up instantly, her heart freezing. “You’re going to the docks? Alone?”

“Not alone,” Dante replied, buttoning his coat. “I’m taking a hundred men. Salvatore’s loyalists think they can overthrow the house while my back is turned. It’s time to clean house permanently.”

“Dante, wait,” Clara pleaded, stepping around the desk and grabbing the sleeve of his coat. “It’s a trap. Salvatore wouldn't risk an open war unless he had heavy backup—federal agents, rival cartels, something. Don't walk into it.”

Dante stopped. He looked down at her hand on his coat sleeve, a faint, melancholic smile touching his lips. He reached up and gently cupped her cheek with his warm palm, his thumb brushing across her cheekbone.

“If I don't go, Clara, they will come here,” Dante whispered, his voice thick with absolute resolve. “They will try to take you and Ellie to use as leverage against me. And that is the one thing I will never, ever allow.”

Before Clara could answer, he leaned down and pressed a deep, lingering kiss to her forehead—a silent promise wrapped in fire and steel. Then, he turned and walked out the door, the heavy mahogany slamming shut behind him.

For the next four hours, Clara sat in the third-floor panic room with Ellie sleeping peacefully in a travel bassinet beside her, staring at the muted security monitors displaying the perimeter of the Gold Coast estate.

Outside, the storm broke over Lake Michigan with blinding flashes of lightning and deafening rolls of thunder.

On the security feeds, she watched flashes of distant red and blue lights down by the southern highway. Gunfire echoed faintly through the reinforced glass windows—a muffled, deadly percussion that signaled a war being fought in the dark.

Every minute felt like a century. Clara held her rosary beads in one hand while stroking Ellie’s soft hair with the other, whispering silent prayers to a God she hadn't prayed to since Marcus died.

Please, she kept repeating in her mind. Please let him come back.

At 4:15 AM, the security monitor near the front gates blinked.

A single black armored sedan pulled up the gravel driveway. The doors opened, and a squad of exhausted, soot-stained Moretti guards stepped out into the rain.

Leading them, his tactical coat torn at the shoulder, a shallow crimson graze across his jawline, and his dark eyes burning with unyielding triumph, was Dante Moretti.

Clara didn't wait for the biometric locks to cycle. She punched the emergency override code into the keypad, threw the heavy steel door open, and ran down the stairs like a woman possessed.

When she reached the grand foyer, Dante was just handing his tactical holster to a guard.

He looked up just in time.

Clara didn't care about the guards, the blood on his coat, or the exhaustion in his posture. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his chest, sobbing with the overwhelming relief of a soul brought back from the dead.

Dante caught her instantly, wrapping his powerful arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he buried his face in her hair.

“It’s over, Clara,” Dante murmured into her ear, his voice ragged and deep. “Salvatore is in federal custody, his loyalists are scattered, and the debt is paid in full. Nobody will ever threaten us again.”

Clara pulled back just enough to look into his dark obsidian eyes, which were no longer cold or distant, but shining with a fierce, burning devotion that belonged only to her.

“You idiot,” she laughed through her tears, pressing her forehead against his. “You absolute idiot.”

Dante smiled—a real, genuine, unreserved smile that completely transformed his face. He leaned down and captured her lips with his in a deep, fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of rain, smoke, and salvation.
