Nobody moved.

The air in the bedroom was thick and metallic, heavy with the weight of a Mexican standoff.

My mother stood in the doorway, her hands surprisingly steady on the heavy wooden stock of the shotgun.

“I watched you destroy one family, Vanessa,” my mother said, her voice shaking with years of buried, agonizing grief. “You are not touching my daughter.”

Vanessa laughed, a dry, hollow sound that echoed in the tense room.

“You’re a suburban housewife, Helen. You don’t have the stomach to pull that trigger.”

“She doesn’t have to,” a deep voice rumbled from the hallway.

Carlo Bellini stepped out of the shadows.

Behind him stood Marco and three other Bellini enforcers, all heavily armed.

Vanessa’s confident smile vanished instantly. “Papa? What are you doing here?”

Carlo looked at his daughter, his face a mask of absolute, unrelenting disgust.

“Luca called me before you cut the estate's phone lines, Vanessa. He told me what you did ten years ago. You killed the mechanic. You killed Sarah. Your own sister.”

Vanessa’s hand trembled, the revolver wavering. “She stole my baby! She took Sophie from me!”

“You gave her up!” Carlo roared, the sound vibrating the floorboards. “To save your own status! Sarah gave that child a home. Luca gave her a name. You gave her nothing but a legacy of blood and deceit.”

He gestured to Marco.

In a flash, Marco stepped forward and ripped the revolver from Vanessa’s grip. She shrieked, fighting wildly against the two men who immediately pinned her arms behind her back.

Carlo turned to Luca.

“The Bellini family owes you a blood debt,” Carlo said formally, bowing his head slightly. “My daughter’s actions have dishonored our name. She will be dealt with according to our laws. She will be exiled, permanently. You have my word, Luca. There will be no war.”

Luca didn’t flinch. “And Sophie?”

Carlo looked at the little girl clutching her blue ribbon on the bed. His hard eyes softened for a fraction of a second.

“Sophie is a Moretti. She belongs with her father.”

He turned and walked out. Marco and the enforcers dragged a screaming, sobbing Vanessa down the stairs and out the front doors.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut.

The house fell completely silent.

My mother lowered the shotgun, her knees finally giving out. I caught her before she hit the floor, burying my face in her shoulder. We were safe. My father’s death was finally answered.

Luca walked slowly to the bed. He sat next to Sophie.

The little girl looked up at him, tears streaming down her face.

“Dad?”

“I’m right here, baby,” he whispered.

“Are you mad at me?”

Luca’s heart broke visibly. He pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her dark hair.

“I could never be mad at you. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. You are my daughter, Sophie. Today, tomorrow, and forever.”

Sophie wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.

Then, she looked over his shoulder at me. She reached out her small hand.

I walked over, still trembling, and sat on the other side of her. She took my hand and held it against Luca’s large, warm hand.

“You’re my family too, Claire,” she whispered.

Luca looked at me, his dark eyes filled with a profound, quiet gratitude that words couldn't touch. He didn’t let go of my hand.

For the first time in five years, the Moretti house didn’t feel like a fortress. It felt like a home.

But as I looked down at our joined hands, I noticed something resting on the bedside table.

Vanessa had dropped her clutch again during the struggle. Spilling out of it was a leather-bound ledger.

And printed on the front cover, in faded gold foil, was my father’s name.
