“Get down!” Vincent roared, tackling me and scooping up sleeping Mia in one fluid, impossibly fast motion.

We hit the floor hard behind a heavy mahogany filing cabinet just as a hail of bullets chewed through the plaster walls above our heads. Wood splinters and dry dust rained down on us like a winter storm.

“Vincent! Boss!” Renzo’s voice crackled furiously over the tactical radio clipped to Vincent’s belt. “We’ve got multiple shooters in the courtyard! They’re using thermal breaching charges on the side doors!”

“Hold the main stairwell!” Vincent shouted back, his hand firmly pressing my head down against the floor while he shielded Mia’s tiny body beneath his broad chest. “Do not let them reach this suite!”

My heart hammered against the floorboards. Terror clawed at my throat, suffocating me. I looked at Mia, who had woken up crying in sheer panic, burying her face in Vincent’s jacket.

“They’re coming for us,” I choked out, tears spilling over my cheeks. “Vincent, because of us, they breached your house—”

“Shut up, Elena,” Vincent interrupted, his voice fiercely steady, though a small trickle of blood was beginning to run down from a shallow graze on his temple where a wood splinter had caught him. He looked down at me, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unyielding resolve. “Listen to me very carefully. Nobody touches you. Nobody touches your daughter. Do you understand me?”

Before I could reply, the heavy oak door of the auxiliary office splintered open under the force of a tactical kick.

Two masked figures in black combat gear rushed into the room, asNextlt rifles raised, scanning the shadows for targets.

Vincent didn't hesitate. While still shielding Mia with one arm, his right hand whipped out from beneath his jacket, gripping a customized Sig Nexter P226.

Bang. Bang.

Two muffled shots echoed in rapid succession. The lead gunman dropped instantly, his chest blossoming with crimson. The second intruder spun around, trying to track Vincent’s position, but Renzo appeared in the doorway behind him like a ghost, delivering a devastating rifle butt to the back of the intruder’s helmet, dropping him to the floor in a heap.

“Clear!” Renzo shouted over the ringing alarm, his pistol smoking. “Boss, the courtyard is secure, but there are more coming through the perimeter wall! We need to move them to the subterranean bunker immediately!”

Vincent stood up, lifting a trembling Mia into his arms. She was sobbing hysterically now, small and fragile against his broad chest. Vincent gently patted her back with one hand, whispering soothing nonsense into her hair—a side of the ruthless syndicate boss that no living soul outside this room had ever witnessed.

He looked down at me, holding out his free hand.

“Elena. Take my hand.”

I took it, my fingers gripping his palm so tightly my knuckles turned white.

We ran.

Through the smoke-filled corridors, down a hidden elevator shaft concealed behind a bookcase in Vincent’s private study, we descended deep into the subterranean levels of the estate.

The reinforced steel bunker was a fortress within a fortress—monitors flashing surveillance feeds, emergency medical supplies neatly stocked, and bright fluorescent lights buzzing overhead.

As soon as the heavy steel vault door hissed shut behind us, cutting off the sounds of the battle outside, Vincent gently set Mia down on a leather medical cot. He knelt beside her, pulling a small juice box and a pack of crackers from an emergency kit, opening them with steady, practiced hands.

“See?” Vincent said softly, his voice remarkably calm as he handed her the juice. “The storm is outside, little one. You’re safe in here.”

Mia sniffled, wiping her tears with the back of her sleeve, and took a small sip of the juice. “Are the loud men gone?”

“They’re gone,” Vincent promised, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity.

I stood by the steel door, watching them, feeling a profound, terrifying realization settle deep into my bones.

I had spent months trying to protect my daughter from Vincent Castalano. But standing here in the ruins of his bullet-riddled estate, I realized the terrifying truth:

Vincent Castalano wasn't the monster who was going to destroy us. He was the only thing standing between us and total annihilation.
