The lights glittered below like a scattered field of diamonds, warm and distant, holding no terror, no ghosts, and no chains.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window of our penthouse office, holding a crystal flute of sparkling water, watching the evening traffic flow smoothly through the streets. My digital art and design studio—funded through a clean, independent venture capital firm that had mysteriously appeared out of nowhere—was thriving. My brother Leo was back in university, safe, happy, and miles away from any shadow of the past.

Behind me, the heavy oak door clicked open.

Footsteps crossed the polished hardwood floor, steady and familiar. Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a warm chin rested gently on my shoulder.

“Working late again, Mrs. Ricci?” Damiano murmured, his voice rich and low against my ear.

I smiled, leaning back against his chest, turning my head slightly to press a soft kiss to his cheek.

“Just finishing up the final proposals for the gallery opening,” I replied, resting my hands over his arms. “Not everyone can run a multi-continental shipping empire and still be home for dinner by seven.”

Damiano chuckled softly, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him. He looked devastatingly handsome in a custom-tailored dark suit, the silver at his temples catching the warm amber light of the penthouse.

“The empire runs itself,” Damiano said smoothly, his blue eyes softening as they looked down at me. “My only real job now is making sure my wife remembers to eat dinner.”

“Your wife,” I repeated the word with a quiet, teasing smile, loving the way it felt on my tongue. “It still amazes me that you actually convinced me to marry a dangerous mafia boss.”

“Not a boss,” Damiano corrected gently, his hands resting securely at my waist. “A protector. And as you well know...”

He leaned down, his lips brushing softly against mine, warm and deliberate, before whispering the words that had changed my destiny the night the world fell apart:

“...I don't share.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer as the city lights twinkled far below us, knowing with absolute certainty that the storm was finally over, and I was finally home.
