By noon, the news had hit the financial news networks like a tidal wave.

Vanessa was sitting in the living room of their multi-million-dollar mansion, frantically scrolling through her phone as notifications poured in from panicked friends, boutique owners, and socialite acquaintances. Her credit cards—every single one of them—had been declined simultaneously at noon while she was trying to purchase a designer handbag to soothe her nerves.

The heavy front door swung open, and Charles stumbled into the foyer, looking ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, and his expensive suit looked suddenly ill-fitting.

“Dad! What is happening?” Vanessa shrieked, standing up from the sofa. “My cards are blocked! The country club just called and suspended our membership! And the media trucks are gathering outside the front gates!”

“We’re ruined,” Charles muttered, collapsing onto a chair, staring blankly at the floor. “Everything is gone. The accounts, the shares, the properties... Northbridge seized it all. We don’t even own this house anymore.”

“Well, call Daniel!” Vanessa demanded, her voice rising in hysterical disbelief. “Call your future son-in-law! Make him fix this! He works in finance, he has connections—surely he can talk to whoever runs Northbridge!”

Charles let out a hollow, bitter laugh that sounded almost like a sob.

“Do you have any idea who runs Northbridge, Vanessa?” Charles asked slowly, looking up at his daughter with eyes full of sheer terror and regret.

“Who?” she snapped. “Some billionaire investor? Some Wall Street shark?”

“Daniel,” Charles whispered.

Vanessa froze. The color drained entirely from her face. “D-Daniel? No. That’s impossible. He’s just a salaried consultant! He drives an old car! He let you humiliate him!”

“He didn’t let us humiliate him,” Charles said, his voice cracking as the full, crushing weight of his ignorance settled over him. “He watched us hang ourselves with our own rope. And we handed him the stool.”
